{"64321":{"#nid":"64321","#data":{"type":"event","title":"Spread of Ideas: Research Presentation by Peter Brecke","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\nThe Brown Bag Series sponsored by the International International Affairs Graduate Organization (INTAGO) presents, \u0022Spread of Ideas\u0022 with Peter Brecke.\n\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EIn this presentation, Peter Brecke will describe how the \u0022Spread of Ideas\u0022 describes a combination of capabilities whose integration makes feasible simulating the spread of socially important ideas such as attitudes, beliefs, goals, and values among individuals in a population.  It integrates seven research fields to do that: \u003Cem\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n- Epidemiology (simulation of disease spread through a population)\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n- Agent modeling (simulation of individuals)\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n- Cultural evolution (evolutionary cultural replicators and self-replicating instructions)\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n- Memetics (Aaron Lynch\u2019s proto-, symbolic algebra)\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n- Evolutionary economics (data structures to represent ideas)\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n- Artificial intelligence (data structures and algorithms for implementing purposive behavior based on ideas such as beliefs, goals, and intentions)\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n- Social networks (identification and construction of networks) \u003C\/em\u003E\n\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EThe talk describes the technological foundations that exist for making such a model, in particular agent-based simulation models of the spread of diseases and insurgency generation.  It then articulates the key social process, the \u0022horizontal\u0022 transmission of ideas, that would be added to the existing capabilities and how scholars have attempted to understand and model that process.
