Users can begin with an \noverview, zoom in on areas of interest, filter out unwanted items, and \nthen click for details-on-demand. With careful design and efficient \nalgorithms, the dynamic queries approach to data exploration can provide\n 100msec updates even for million-item visualizations that can represent\n billion-record databases.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EThis talk reviews the growing commercial success stories such as \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.spotfire.com\/\u0022\u003Ewww.spotfire.com\u003C\/a\u003E, \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.smartmoney.com\/marketmap\u0022\u003Ewww.smartmoney.com\/marketmap\u003C\/a\u003E and \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.hivegroup.com\/\u0022\u003Ewww.hivegroup.com\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nand research tools for time series data such as (\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cs.umd.edu\/hcil\/timesearcher\u0022\u003Ewww.cs.umd.edu\/hcil\/timesearcher\u003C\/a\u003E ). \u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EThe central theme is the integration of statistics with visualization\n as applied to temporal event sequences such as electronic health \nrecords (\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cs.umd.edu\/hcil\/lifelines2\u0022\u003Ewww.cs.umd.edu\/hcil\/lifelines2\u003C\/a\u003E and \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cs.umd.edu\/hcil\/lifeflow\u0022\u003Ewww.cs.umd.edu\/hcil\/lifeflow\u003C\/a\u003E)\u0026nbsp; and social network data (\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cs.umd.edu\/hcil\/socialaction\u0022\u003Ewww.cs.umd.edu\/hcil\/socialaction\u003C\/a\u003E and \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.codeplex.com\/nodexl\u0022\u003Ewww.codeplex.com\/nodexl\u003C\/a\u003E).\u003C\/p\u003E\n        \n        \n\n\n    \n            \n                      \n              \u003Cstrong\u003EBio:\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/strong\u003E\n                    \u003Cp\u003EBen Shneiderman (\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cs.umd.edu\/%7Eben\u0022\u003Ehttp:\/\/www.cs.umd.edu\/~ben\u003C\/a\u003E)\n is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Founding \nDirector (1983-2000) of the Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory (\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cs.umd.edu\/hcil\/\u0022\u003Ehttp:\/\/www.cs.umd.edu\/hcil\/\u003C\/a\u003E)\n at the University of Maryland.\u0026nbsp; He was elected as a Fellow of the \nAssociation for Computing (ACM) in 1997, a Fellow of the American \nAssociation for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in 2001, and a Member \nof the National Academy of Engineering in 2010.\u0026nbsp; He received the ACM \nSIGCHI Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EBen is the co-author with Catherine Plaisant of \u003Cem\u003EDesigning the User Interface: Strategies for Effective Human-Computer Interaction \u003C\/em\u003E(5th ed., 2010) \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.awl.com\/DTUI\/\u0022\u003Ehttp:\/\/www.awl.com\/DTUI\/\u003C\/a\u003E.\u0026nbsp; With Stu Card and Jock Mackinlay, he co-authored \u003Cem\u003EReadings in Information Visualization: Using Vision to Think \u003C\/em\u003E(1999).\u0026nbsp; With Ben Bederson he co-authored \u003Cem\u003EThe Craft of Information Visualization \u003C\/em\u003E(2003).
