The Fulbright award is one such fellowship that funds recipients with\nthe choice of a year of research, graduate study or serving as an English teaching\nassistant at a host institution in one of 140 countries. \u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech currently has students in Cyprus, Mongolia and\nthe Netherlands performing research on Fulbright grants. Historically,\nTech has had fewer Fulbright scholars than many of its peer institutions, but\nthat need not be the case.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cLast year, Georgia Tech had three Fulbright winners and the\nUniversity of Georgia had 11, with nine accepting,\u201d said Karen Adams, interim\ndirector of the Fellowships office. \u201cWe should encourage Tech students to apply\nbecause of what they can provide the world and what the world can provide\nthem.\u201d The University of Michigan had the highest number of 2010-11 Fulbrights,\nwith 40 students accepting awards.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EFulbright applicants are asked to choose a country, obtain a\nletter of invitation from a host institution and plan a project. Faculty members\nare an essential part of the equation, connecting students with contacts for\nletters of invitation and guiding students to institutions performing\ninnovative research.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EStudents may apply during their undergraduate senior year,\nas master\u2019s students or in the early stages of doctoral work, and must be U.S.\ncitizens. Though the campus application deadline is Sept. 16, students should begin\nplanning now in order to have thorough applications and be competitive in the process.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EPreparation for faculty Fulbright awards should also be\nunderway, as the faculty deadline is Aug. 1.
