Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering. Rather, they\u0026rsquo;re already working on the next steps to turn their ideas into commercial products.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFor fourth-year student Sammie Hasen and BCase, that means finishing the final days of a Kickstarter fundraising campaign. The proceeds will help her pay for the tooling to begin injection-mold manufacturing. For team CADe and Sean Cody, who earned his biomedical engineering bachelor\u0026rsquo;s in December, the next step is the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/sites.gatech.edu\/startuplaunch2021\/\u0022\u003EStartup Launch program\u003C\/a\u003E this summer through Georgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s CREATE-X program.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;The opportunity to be on stage in front of a lot of people is free advertising. A lot of people see this, and you\u0026#39;re going to start to generate that original buzz,\u0026rdquo; said Cody, whose team announced the app store release of their CADe smartphone app during the finals. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/intrfacesolutions.com\/\u0022\u003ECADe\u003C\/a\u003E (pronounced like \u0026ldquo;Caddy\u0026rdquo;) is an app that turns a smartphone into another input device for 3D computer-aided design (CAD) software, a tool used by millions of engineers every day. Users can manipulate the models using their phone\u0026rsquo;s touch interface: pinch to zoom, use two fingers to move the model around, one finger to rotate.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;It\u0026rsquo;s the movements that everyone in this day and age is familiar with using on a mobile interface, and because of that, a user can pick it up and start using it right away,\u0026rdquo; Cody said. \u0026ldquo;CADe functions with your traditional mouse, so you\u0026#39;re basically doubling your user input into the computer. You\u0026#39;re improving the user experience of the app, and you\u0026#39;re improving the user\u0026#39;s efficiency.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ECody said initial tests showed users can see 20% efficiency gains using the CADe app on a phone in one hand and manipulating the mouse in the other. And with 20 million people using the most common 3D CAD packages, capturing just 5% of that market \u0026mdash; the team\u0026rsquo;s goal \u0026mdash; would mean a million subscribers.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;We\u0026#39;re excited to really launch this publicly and have a wider database of feedback,\u0026rdquo; Cody said.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHasen is, likewise, on the cusp of more user feedback. She\u0026rsquo;s nearing the end of an \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/bcase-by-medsur\/bcasetm-bringing-convenience-to-taking-birth-control\u0022\u003Ealready successful Kickstarter campaign\u003C\/a\u003E, where she\u0026rsquo;s outpaced her $3,500 goal and is still collecting donations. She has been 3D printing prototypes of her BCase birth control storage solution; the infusion of funding will allow her to scale up production.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBCase attaches directly to the back of a smartphone, where it discreetly carries birth control \u0026mdash; or potentially any similar multi-pill pack.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHasen came up with the idea after many an interrupted dinner or evening out with friends. Their smartphone alarms would go off to remind them it was time to take their pill, and they\u0026rsquo;d realize it was at home.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;We\u0026#39;d have to turn around, no matter where we were, and go get it,\u0026rdquo; Hasen said. \u0026ldquo;It kept happening, and I was like, \u0026lsquo;Why does this keep happening?\u0026rsquo;\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWith BCase, the pill and the alarm are in the same place. Plus, who leaves home without their phone anymore?\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;You know you\u0026#39;re onto something when you have everyone saying, \u0026lsquo;How has this not been done before?\u0026rsquo; It\u0026#39;s just something that\u0026#39;s so in plain sight that no one sees it,\u0026rdquo; Hasen said. \u0026ldquo;Hopefully, this is the big product that people are like, \u0026lsquo;Wow, this has really made my life easier.\u0026rsquo;\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHasen said she\u0026rsquo;s building more than a product and a business with BCase; she wants to build a platform to make women\u0026rsquo;s lives better.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;I want to make sure that it is not just profiting off of women, but also supporting women,\u0026rdquo; she said.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Plan B, tampons, birth control, IUDs \u0026mdash; they were all designed by men. There are huge user flaws to them because the designers never used the product,\u0026rdquo; Hasen said. \u0026ldquo;My goal would be to have a primarily female team. I really want to make sure that the customer is the designer, and the designer is the customer.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.gpb.org\/events\/television\/2021\/03\/17\/the-2021-georgia-tech-inventure-prize\u0022\u003Elive, televised finals of the InVenture Prize March 17\u003C\/a\u003E capped a months-long journey for \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/inventureprize.gatech.edu\/previous-competitions\/2021\u0022\u003Ethe six teams of finalists\u003C\/a\u003E. Judges awarded \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/news.gatech.edu\/2021\/03\/18\/delta-jacket-wins-2021-georgia-tech-inventure-prize\u0022\u003Efirst prize to Delta Jacket and second to StartProto\u003C\/a\u003E.
