Head offered her thoughts on two recent high-profile examples at Widener and Georgetown universities.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EExcerpt:\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cblockquote\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003ECharacterizing students\u0026rsquo; abilities based on their race crosses a bright line for many professors. \u0026ldquo;We know that implicit bias is a problem,\u0026rdquo; said Karen Head, associate chair of the School of Literature, Media, and Communication at the Georgia Institute of Technology. What the Georgetown instructor said, though, was \u0026ldquo;pretty explicit,\u0026rdquo; said Head, who is also the executive director of the Naugle CommLab.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe Widener comments, Head said, sound more like the run-of-the-mill venting session professors might have in the mailroom, or over a coffee. \u0026ldquo;Complaining about students,\u0026rdquo; Head said, \u0026ldquo;is as old as teachers and students.\u0026rdquo; So long as it stays behind closed doors, she said, it\u0026rsquo;s often seen as harmless.
