{"647263":{"#nid":"647263","#data":{"type":"news","title":"CSE Faculty Member Recognized for Contributions to Computational Science ","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003ESchool of Computational Science and Engineering\u0026nbsp;(CSE)\u0026nbsp;Associate Professor\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/~echow\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EEdmond Chow\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;has been named\u0026nbsp;as one of 28 new\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/sinews.siam.org\/Details-Page\/siam-announces-class-of-2021-fellows\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003ESociety for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) Fellow\u003C\/a\u003Es for 2021.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESIAM represents an international\u0026nbsp;community of over 14,000 members\u0026nbsp;and is considered the leading\u0026nbsp;professional\u0026nbsp;organization for\u0026nbsp;computational and applied\u0026nbsp;mathematicians in industry and academia.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThis\u0026nbsp;SIAM recognition\u0026nbsp;highlights\u0026nbsp;Chow\u0026rsquo;s\u0026nbsp;contributions\u0026nbsp;to\u0026nbsp;the field of\u0026nbsp;computational science and engineering\u0026nbsp;within the areas\u0026nbsp;of numerical linear algebra and high-performance computing\u0026nbsp;(HPC).\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESpecifically, Chow\u0026rsquo;s research aims to develop numerical methods that are specialized for\u0026nbsp;HPC\u0026nbsp;computers\u0026nbsp;used to\u0026nbsp;solve large-scale scientific computing problems\u0026nbsp;such as\u0026nbsp;those found in\u0026nbsp;quantum chemistry.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;My students and I search for new, efficient ways to computationally solve the mathematical models that we use to model the world around us,\u0026rdquo; he said.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;We also implement the methods in open software so that they can be easily used by others. In recent years, we\u0026#39;ve been working particularly with quantum chemists, who have a rich source of numerical and other computational problems.\u0026rdquo;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWhile he remains active in external roles, such as serving\u0026nbsp;as deputy chair\u0026nbsp;on the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/awards.acm.org\/bell\/committee\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EACM Gordon Bell Prize Committee\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;and\u0026nbsp;as\u0026nbsp;associate editor for\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/toms.acm.org\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EACM Transactions on Mathematical Software\u003C\/a\u003E,\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/em\u003EChow says one of his goals is to\u0026nbsp;build\u0026nbsp;a stronger community around scientific computing, particularly at Georgia Tech.\u0026nbsp;He is currently\u0026nbsp;facilitating this goal by serving as co-chair of the 2022 SIAM Annual Meeting and by organizing the\u0026nbsp;Georgia Scientific Computing Symposium in February 2022.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe Georgia Scientific Computing Symposium\u0026nbsp;offers a\u0026nbsp;forum for students and faculty from across\u0026nbsp;the state of\u0026nbsp;Georgia to\u0026nbsp;gather\u0026nbsp;and\u0026nbsp;share recent advances in all aspects of scientific computing.\u0026nbsp;Notably, the one-day symposium\u0026nbsp;will be hosted by CSE at Georgia Tech in 2022.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;It has been very heart-warming to receive so many congratulatory messages from literally around the world in the past few days.
