ARTech Choreographer Merges Mobile Apps with Live Performance

The Ferst
Center for the Arts continues its
new ARTech artist residency program this spring with New York-based
choreographer and media artist Jonah
Bokaer. Through ARTech, artists explore
the connection between art and technology, visiting the Georgia Tech campus to develop
work that employs science or technology as an integral part of the creative
development process.

Working with Georgia Tech’s School of Interactive Computing
and assistant professor Dr. Karen Liu, Bokaer is exploring the use of
motion capture in performance. Through
motion capture, Bokaer’s choreographed movement phrases are digitally recorded using
a specialized software program. Bokaer
is also collaborating with the Georgia Tech College of Architecture's music technology program to develop an interactive mobile application, “Mass Mobile,”
for use by the audience during the performance. Georgia Tech graduate student
Stephen Garrett traveled to Avignon, France, with Bokaer to complete work on
the app for the world debut of the performance, FILTER, at the Les Hivernales festival. While on campus, Bokaer is also
serving as a guest lecturer with the School of Architecture. His season-long residency concludes with the
American premiere of FILTER on Saturday, April 2, at the Ferst Center.

During the residency, Bokaer is opening his creative
process to the community and to students of all ages, from Georgia Tech and
Emory University students to our public school partners, Grady High School and
Centennial Place Elementary. Guests
observing Bokaer have submitted their reflections as part of the ARTech Blog.

Tickets for the April 2 performance are available for
$28. Tickets are not required for other
ARTech events. Visit ferstcenter.org or call the Ferst Center box office at
404-894-9600 for ticket information.

Bokaer's residency continues as follows:
