{"64900":{"#nid":"64900","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Student Medical Organization Earns Top Chapter Honor","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EThe American Medical Student Association (AMSA) has honored\nthe Georgia Tech chapter with its Paul R. Wright Award for chapter excellence.\nThe Tech chapter won out over five other finalists, and is the first pre-medical\nchapter to ever receive the honor. Students Robin Jacob, co-president, and Chun\nYong, vice president, will receive the award in person at the AMSA Annual\nConvention in Washington, D.C., March 11-13.\n\n\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cGeorgia Tech has done a lot to receive this award,\u201d said\nYong, who helped plan the organization\u2019s pre-health conference in February. \u201cWe\nhave had many meetings, volunteer events, banquets, global health education\nweeks and our annual pre-health conference.\u201d \u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EYong said the primary criteria for the award were\nrecruitment and activities, both heavily emphasized by Tech\u2019s chapter, which\nboasts more than 350 members and is the largest in the state. This year, the\nchapter created a mentorship program for freshman and organized a medical\nmission trip to Peru during spring break. Its pre-health conference included a\ncareer fair open to all Tech students, giving the chapter an opportunity to\nserve all of campus, not just its own members.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThe recognition is accompanied by a monetary award for the\nchapter\u2019s continued programming, some of which will fund a Tech AMSA\nScholarship, enabling the chapter to give back to its own members for their\ndedication. \u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EMirjana Brockett in the School of Biology serves as faculty\nadvisor for the group, with advisement also provided by Jennifer Kimble,\ndirector of pre-health advising. \u201cThey are a wonderful group of students,\u201d\nBrockett said. \u201cOne of the best student organizations.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EGT AMSA was also one of several schools to receive a Chapter\nof the Quarter Award from AMSA.
