That\u0026rsquo;s why engineers should also serve human needs, as stated in \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.gatech.edu\/about\u0022\u003EGeorgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s mission\u003C\/a\u003E \u0026ldquo;to develop leaders who advance technology and improve the human condition\u0026rdquo; and focus on \u0026ldquo;making a positive impact in the lives of people everywhere.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn an article published in\u0026nbsp;a recent issue of the \u003Cem\u003EISE\u003C\/em\u003E magazine from the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers, the moral complications of supply chain optimization are discussed by \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.isye.gatech.edu\/users\/chen-zhou\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EChen Zhou\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E, associate chair for undergraduate studies and associate professor in the H. Milton School of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISyE).\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Over the years, ISE has developed many tools for logistics and supply chain, analytics, manufacturing, ergonomics, quality improvement and work system design,\u0026rdquo; Zhou wrote in the article. \u0026ldquo;However, the challenge in modern society is that improvements in cost reduction and efficiency improvement are not sufficient to supply human needs.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThis misalignment is easily visible in the case of food deserts, where convenience stores and fast-food restaurants thrive because of their low costs and high efficiency. They do not provide sufficient nutrition, but supermarkets and family restaurants cannot compete against them because fresh produce has a shorter shelf life and is difficult to transport and store.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAnother key example is the healthcare system, which is filled with invisible contracts that lead to high healthcare costs when pricing information is not transparent. Between hospitals and patients, there are other players \u0026ndash; value added networks, group purchasing organizations, and pharmacy benefit managers \u0026ndash; who are all optimizing their interests.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech Senior Design students have found a lot of waste in hospitals that arises when insurance companies are not concerned about product charges if their costs are covered by premiums, leading to potential overconsumption of medical services.
