Another team led by \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/econ.gatech.edu\/people\/person\/laura-taylor\u0022\u003ELaura Taylor\u003C\/a\u003E, professor, and chair in the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/econ.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ESchool of Economics\u003C\/a\u003E, received a grant to focus on the health effects of air pollution.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe megaregions project will build on previous work done by the team to understand what will be needed to ensure the sustainability of U.S. megaregions against potential climate change-related disasters.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;The overarching aim of this research is to work in partnership with both researchers and practitioners to derive general principles for identifying and reducing existing vulnerabilities to critical infrastructure that will bolster regional resilience and prosperity, thus preserving the social-ecological-built assets of these urban-rural regions,\u0026rdquo; they wrote in their project proposal.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe team includes researchers with expertise in sustainable development, satellite data analysis, transportation and infrastructure engineering, remote sensing and information technology, econometrics, energy and food security, community partnership-building, and U.S., Japanese, and European affairs. In addition to Woodall, Borowitz, \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t\u0026amp;rct=j\u0026amp;q=\u0026amp;esrc=s\u0026amp;source=web\u0026amp;cd=\u0026amp;cad=rja\u0026amp;uact=8\u0026amp;ved=2ahUKEwji3rHG_rjyAhV_RjABHf0tAu0QFnoECAMQAQ\u0026amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fiac.gatech.edu%2Fpeople%2Fperson%2Falasdair-young\u0026amp;usg=AOvVaw0A0VkTljNe1HWk30ySxycT\u0022\u003EAlasdair Young\u003C\/a\u003E of the Nunn School,\u0026nbsp; and \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/econ.gatech.edu\/people\/person\/shatakshee-dhongde\u0022\u003EShatakshee Dhongde\u003C\/a\u003E of the School of Economics, the team includes faculty from the College of Engineering and the College of Computing.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ETaylor\u0026rsquo;s project, \u0026ldquo;The Health Effects of Air Pollution: An Interdisciplinary Research Program,\u0026rdquo; draws on expertise from across the Institute with co-investigators \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/econ.gatech.edu\/people\/person\/dylan-brewer\u0022\u003EDylan Brewer\u003C\/a\u003E, assistant professor of economics; Michael Chang, the deputy director of the Brooks Byers Institute of Sustainable Systems; and Randall Guensler, Michael Rodgers, and Ted Russell in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ETheir research seeks to understand better how air pollution affects birth outcomes such as preterm birth, birth weight, and the presence of congenital disabilities. The goal is to help craft policies to improve those outcomes, especially in disadvantaged communities unequally exposed to pollution.
