His work focuses on the translation of human behavioral patterns and perceptions within real and virtual environments into computer models and simulations to better understand design decisions. He often develops custom hardware sensors, interactive systems, and software applications for capturing occupant behavior, testing human spatial perception in 3D virtual environments, running discrete-event and agent-based modeling and simulation, and performing spatial analysis in the intersections between Building Information Modeling and Geographic Information Systems. Mr. Swarts works in the Interactive Media Architecture Group in Education (IMAGINE Lab) in the Center for Geographic Information Systems (CGIS) developing collaborative virtual and augmented environments alongside models of landscape perception and predictive models of building performance based on social interaction probabilities. He works in the SimTigrate Design Lab developing sensor technologies for tracking human behavior in healthcare environments to produce simulation models for optimization of the patient experience. In the Center for Assistive Technology and Environmental Access (CATEA), Mr. Swarts leads several software development projects around custom user interfaces designed using universal design principles. He assists in running the Interactive Product Design Lab (IPDL) where Industrial Design and Human Computer Interaction students come to create functional interactive electronic prototypes. Additionally he teaches courses on computer programming for designers in the School of Architecture, and he teaches courses on designing for interaction and interactive environments in the School of Industrial Design. Mr. Swarts is a co-founder of Paracision LLC, which develops workshops and custom software solutions for design firms around parametric modeling and decision making. French is dean of the College of Design and professor of City and Regional Planning at Georgia Institute of Technology. He joined Georgia Tech in 1992 as the director of the City Planning program and served in that position until August 1999. He was the director of the Center for Geographic Information Systems from 1997 through 2011. He served as associate dean for research for the College of Architecture (now the College of Design) from July 2009 through June 2013.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFrench\u0026rsquo;s teaching and research activities focus on sustainable urban development, land use planning, GIS applications and natural hazard risk assessment. In addition to his administrative assignments, Professor French has regularly taught graduate courses in land use, planning, and GIS. He has graduated six Ph.D. students and advised more than 50 Masters students in City and Regional Planning. He has also served on numerous dissertation committees in Architecture, Civil Engineering and Public Policy.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EOver the past twenty-five years, French has been the principal investigator or co-principal investigator on more than seventy research projects. He has participated in a number of National Science Foundation projects dealing with flood and earthquake hazards and was the Social Science Thrust Leader for the Mid-America Earthquake Center, a NSF Engineering Research Center. He has extensive experience in building and managing multidisciplinary teams of social scientists, architects, engineers and scientists. French is the author or co-author of more than 25 refereed journal articles and four books. He has served on the editorial boards of the \u003Cem\u003EJournal of the American Planning Association, Journal of Planning Education and Research, Journal of the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association \u003C\/em\u003Eand\u003Cem\u003E Earthquake Spectra.\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFrench has served on numerous Institute committees at Georgia Tech, including the conflict of interest committee, the strategic technology investment committee and the strategic plan implementation committee, where he was the liaison for the Burdell Interdisciplinary Design Center initiative. He has also chaired the College of Architecture Reappointment, Promotion and Tenure Committee and served on the Institute RP\u0026amp;T committee.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFrench holds a Ph.D. in City and Regional Planning from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Before coming to Georgia Tech, he taught for ten years at California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo. In 1987-88, he served as the visiting professor of resources planning in the Civil Engineering Department at Stanford University. Professor Guhathakurta was instrumental in developing the Urban Modeling and Simulation Lab in ASU\u2019s College of Design. He also serves as the lead member of several research centers at ASU including the GeoDa Center for Geospatial Analysis and Computation, Decision Center for a Desert City, and the project on Sustainable Urban Systems, Technologies, and Infrastructure (\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/sustain.lab.asu.edu\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003ESUSTaIn\u003C\/a\u003E). He is an author of 5 books and monographs and over 70 scientific papers. His article on the interface between urban modeling and planning theory was awarded the Chester Rapkin Award for the best paper (1999) in Journal of Planning Education and Research. She is the author of over 50 articles and three books, \u003Cem\u003EStemming Middle Class Decline: The Challenge to Economic Development Planning\u003C\/em\u003E (1994); \u003Cem\u003EEconomic Revitalization: Cases and Strategies for City and Suburb\u003C\/em\u003E (2002 with Joan Fitzgerald); and \u003Cem\u003EPlanning Local Economic Development\u003C\/em\u003E, 4th edition, with Edward J. Blakely.\u0026nbsp; Both \u003Cem\u003EEconomic Revitalization\u003C\/em\u003E and\u0026nbsp; \u003Cem\u003EPlanning Local Economic Development\u003C\/em\u003E have been adopted by a wide array of classes in the Social Sciences across the United States.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ESince 2006, Leigh has led a large scale research effort involving three universities focused on sustainable industrial systems for urban regions and funded by the National Science Foundation. Her long-term brownfield redevelopment work led to her testimony before the U.S. House Subcommittee on reauthorizing the national brownfields program in 2008. In mid-2010, Leigh assumed the directorship of the School of City and Regional Planning\u2019s doctoral program. At CGIS, Siva is involved in a variety of projects apart from his primary role of system, network, and IT administration. Recent projects include design and development of a GIS database for the Annie E. Casey Foundation, developing a GIS framework for MEAG Power\u2019s Location Georgia group, and developing an enterprise GIS plan for the City of Albany, Ga. He was a contributor in City of Atlanta\u2019s initial Enterprise GIS implementation efforts and played a vital role in the development and operation of Georgia GIS Data Clearinghouse, a spatial data repository for the State of Georgia. Siva implemented the first National Spatial Data Infrastructure node in Georgia.\u0026nbsp; He has provided GIS research support for various ongoing projects supported by National Center for Earthquake Engineering Research, National Science Foundation, Mid America Earthquake Center, and other sponsors. In addition, Siva administers the ESRI GIS software program, the ESRI Education Development Center for Georgia Tech, and the ERDAS GAHEAK software for the University system of Georgia.
