They are engineered for specific goals or functions but take emergence into account during the design process, allowing the final system to emerge through natural and non-natural biological processes. Principles and mechanisms derived from investigating developmental systems are used to enhance or harness multicellular form and function. M-CELS research is intended to provide a fundamental engineering understanding that enables a quantitative approach bridging between single cells and organs or organisms.

The purpose of this seed grant is to promote interdisciplinary collaborations between researchers. We view this as a stepping stone for larger scale proposals from the M-CELS @ GT-Emory community and a practical follow-up from the December 3rd Kickoff Meeting.

Where do the funds come from?
The NSF Science and Technology Center Emergent Behavior of Integrated Cellular Systems (EBICS) existed between GT, MIT, and UIUC and other partner institutions from 2010-2020.
EBICS is using programmatic funds in its final year of no cost extension to catalyze a larger footprint of related research activity beyond the 5 EBICS funded researchers at GT.

How can I use the money?
We expect to support approximately 10 grants for $10,000 direct cost each to be spent from January – June 2022.
