Khapaeva Analyzes ‘Trendy Monsters’ in New Article

Dina Khapaeva, professor of Russian in the School of Modern Languages, published an article comparing how popular culture portrays Nazis and homicidal monsters, such as vampires, cannibals, and serial killers.

The article, titled “Trendy Monsters: The Nazis, the Perpetrator Turn, and Popular Culture,” was published in the November issue of New German Critique, the top journal in memory studies.

In the article, Khapaeva argues that the two groups’ images have evolved in parallel and interconnected ways, and that in the past three decades, fictional monsters have transitioned from aberrant criminals to cultural idols, with their humanized forms influencing the trajectory of the images of Nazis.
