Undergraduates\u0026nbsp;in Assistant Professor\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/hsoc.gatech.edu\/people\/person\/german-vergara\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EGerm\u0026aacute;n Vergara\u0026#39;s\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;capstone class on global environmental history and Assistant Professor\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/hsoc.gatech.edu\/people\/person\/allen-hyde\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EAllen Hyde\u0026#39;s\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;capstone class on equity \u0026amp; community engagement presented their work, as well as those doing independent research with faculty.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe projects included third-year student Olivia Villanova\u0026#39;s research on\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003ESustainability in Vogue: A Cultural History of Sustainable Fashion.\u003C\/em\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u0026quot;Fashion has a very long connection to the environment,\u0026quot; she said in her presentation. \u0026quot;What I wanted to look at was, how has the concept of sustainable fashion evolved over time?\u0026quot;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFourth-year student\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/iac.gatech.edu\/news\/item\/649265\/student-spotlight-meet-teresa\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003ETeresa Mu\u0026ntilde;oz\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/a\u003Eused her great-grandparents\u0026#39; farm in Cuba as a case study for her research on\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003ESugarcane and National Identity in Matanzas, Cuba 1880 to 1960.\u003C\/em\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u0026quot;Her [great grandmother\u0026#39;s] testimony through oral history is what really motivated me to explore this topic,\u0026quot; she said. Mu\u0026ntilde;oz explained that the narrative around sugarcane in Cuba was often American-centric, and she wanted to share another side of the story. \u0026quot;I wanted to show the Cuban people were not passive in their history; they played a very important role,\u0026quot; she said.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFifth-year student Jake Windham also found his research topic close to home: at his work in fine dining. Spending time with the sommelier at his job inspired him to learn more about American wine \u0026mdash; specifically, wine in Napa Valley. His research on\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003EThe Judgement of Napa: An Environmental History of California Wine\u003C\/em\u003E\u0026nbsp;examined how events such as prohibition affected the industry in the past and how climate change may affect it in the future. \u0026quot;Wine expresses its environment and the human tradition more than anything else,\u0026quot; he said in his presentation. \u0026quot;And also, it tastes good.\u0026quot;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EStudents in Associate Professor \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/hsoc.gatech.edu\/people\/person\/carla-gerona\u0022\u003ECarla Gerona\u0026#39;s\u003C\/a\u003E class on\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003EDigital History and Early America\u003C\/em\u003E\u0026nbsp;also presented the story maps they created this semester. They examined old publications from the Revolutionary War, such as the\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003EGeorgia Gazette,\u003C\/em\u003E\u0026nbsp;and used software to map the information they found, creating visual depictions of battle routes, the origins of trade goods, and more. Others from Hyde\u0026#39;s class presented their contributions to his ongoing community-partnership projects\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/hsoc.gatech.edu\/news\/item\/650530\/summer-ypar-institute-empowers-youth-create-change\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EYouth Mobility and Participatory Action Research in Clarkston, GA\u003C\/a\u003E, and\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/research.gatech.edu\/interdisciplinary-team-awarded-1-million-nsf-grant-youth-advocacy-and-disaster-resilience\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EDisaster Resilience and Youth Advocacy in Savannah, GA.\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp; \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe capstone class and symposium gives students the opportunity to learn how to do research, write in-depth papers, and present it in an engaging and understandable way, said Vergara.
