  <title><![CDATA[What is a 'Variant of Concern' or a 'Variant of Interest' when dealing with coronavirus mutations?]]></title>
  <body><![CDATA[<p>Scientists studying the Omicron variant&nbsp;have developed different categories to warn the public about the level of concern that should be placed on mutations of the coronavirus. Variants of the virus&nbsp;are sometimes more bark than bite, but occasionally the threat is real.&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href="https://chemistry.gatech.edu/people/finn/m.g.">M.G .Finn</a>, professor and Chair of the <a href="https://chemistry.gatech.edu">School of Chemistry and Biochemistry</a>, and&nbsp;James A. Carlos Family Chair for Pediatric Technology, says Omicron&nbsp;quickly moved from a Variant of Interest to a Variant of Concern (as defined&nbsp;by the Centers for Disease Control)&nbsp;because of the possibility it could be more transmissible than previous Covid-19 variants.&nbsp;</p>
