  <title><![CDATA[Geoengineering: We should not play dice with the planet]]></title>
  <body><![CDATA[<p>Science fiction-like technology fixes for global warming&nbsp;like &quot;solar geoengineering,&quot; which involve cooling off the planet by dumping vast amounts of chemicals into the upper atmosphere, could backfire with potentially disastrous side effects. So says&nbsp;<a href="https://eas.gatech.edu/people/cobb-dr-kim">Kim Cobb</a>, Georgia Power Chair and ADVANCE Professor in the <a href="https://eas.gatech.edu">School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences</a>, and director&nbsp;of the <a href="https://globalchange.gatech.edu">Global Change Program</a>. Cobb, who&nbsp;was a lead author on the recent UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ipcc.ch/report/ar6/wg1/">Sixth Assessment Report</a>, writes in this op-ed (shared&nbsp;with colleague Michael E. Mann from Penn State University) that while &quot;this is the time to apply bold, creative thinking to accelerate progress toward climate stability, this is not the time to play fast and loose with the planet, in service of any agenda, be it political or scientific in nature.&quot;</p>
