Meeting this goal requires network operators to perform a wide range of\nmeasurement studies to understand network status and dynamics. Although a large\nnumber of passive and active measurement tools and techniques are used, the\nproblem of building a comprehensive and integrated monitoring infrastructure to\naddress all ISP\u2019s needs (ranging from performance monitoring, anomaly diagnosis\nto network planning) is far from solved.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIn this dissertation, we focus on the\npassive measurement study using the following general method. We collect the\nmeasurement data from distributed network elements, and apply advanced\nstatistical methods tailored to network domain to uncover meaningful\ninformation from the data set. Our three studies fulfill three requirements of\nnetwork measurement respectively: performance monitoring, troubleshooting, and\nnetwork design and planning. First, we propose a novel methodology to infer the\ndelay distribution passively without any perturbation to real traffic. Second,\nwe design a system that can automatically transform and compress low-level syslog\nmessages into meaningful prioritized network events. It can provide critical\ninput to network troubleshooting and visualization. Finally, we analyze and\nmodel user activities in an operational nation-wide IPTV network, and design a\nworkload generator which takes a small number of input parameters and generates\nsynthetic trace that mimic aggregated user behavior. The generator can estimate\nthe unicast and multicast traffic accurately, proving itself as a useful tool\nin driving network design and planning study.
