The Outstanding Engineer Award recognizes a member of IEEE Region 3, who, through technical and professional abilities, has made an outstanding contribution to the electro-technology profession. Calhoun was selected for his contributions to data-driven analysis and multimodal brain imaging and genetic data. He will be honored at the Region 3 annual meeting, SoutheastCon 2022, on April 2 in Mobile, AL.

“I have always enjoyed my interactions with IEEE since I first joined in college," said Calhoun. "Interdisciplinary research at the intersection between engineering and neuroscience/neuroimaging is rapidly growing and producing exciting new results almost every day."

Calhoun is a Georgia Research Alliance (GRA) Eminent Scholar in brain health and image analysis and holds faculty appointments at Georgia State, Georgia Tech, and Emory. He is the director of the Center for Advanced Brain Imaging (CABI), a joint venture between Georgia State and Georgia Tech, and the founding director of the Center for Translational Research in Neuroimaging and Data Science (TReNDS), a tri-institutional effort supported by Georgia State, Georgia Tech and Emory to increase cooperation among Atlanta brain imaging researchers. Calhoun’s research is focused on developing new ways to analyze and use complex brain imaging data by drawing on advanced machine-learning approaches. He is particularly interested in the development of brain-based markers of healthy and disorder.
