With the massive scale of\ncloud systems and the complexity of cloud applications, providing efficient and\nscalable monitoring functionalities to cloud administrators and users remains a\ngrand challenge.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThis dissertation research is dedicated to the research\nand development of a monitoring as a service (MaaS) paradigm. Delivering\nmonitoring as a service in the cloud not only makes monitoring functionalities\neasily accessible and reduces application maintenance cost, but also provides\nunique service and workload consolidation opportunities to further enhance the\nefficiency, scalability, reliability and customizability of state monitoring.\nWe conduct our research by identifying the problems and opportunities in system\nand application state monitoring domains, developing practical and scalable\nsolutions, and evaluating our solutions by providing experimental and\nanalytical comparison with existing approaches.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EConcretely, we present a suite of key functional\nrequirements in MaaS, including instantaneous state monitoring and window-based\nmonitoring, periodic and violation-likelihood based monitoring, single tenant\nand multi-tenant state monitoring. Furthermore, these monitoring functions\nshould also meet quality-of-service demands on pursuing monitoring accuracy,\nenhancing monitoring scalability, and improving monitoring effectiveness\nthrough consolidation and isolation.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIn this dissertation proposal, I will present the MaaS model\nand my research efforts to date. I will focus on window-based state monitoring\nprotocol and algorithms.
