Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Climate Accords,\u0026rdquo; said \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/inta.gatech.edu\/people\/person\/anjali-thomas\u0022 rel=\u0022noreferrer noopener\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EAnjali Thomas\u003C\/a\u003E, associate professor in the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/inta.gatech.edu\/\u0022 rel=\u0022noreferrer noopener\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003ESam Nunn School of International Affairs\u003C\/a\u003E and director of the new degree program. \u0026ldquo;This new degree will provide students with the multi-disciplinary knowledge and training they need to help address challenges in anything from infrastructure provision to emerging market investment opportunities.\u0026rdquo;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch2\u003EAddressing the Need for a Global Development Workforce\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/h2\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EGlobal development professionals work to reduce poverty and inequality for people worldwide. This means battling the challenging dual forces of climate change and rapid urbanization in developing countries. Several international development organizations, including the United Nations Human Settlement Programme, the United States Agency for International Development, and the World Bank supported the proposal for the M.S. in Global Development alongside private companies such as Google.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Given the likely growth in demand for professionals with domain expertise in global development, we would be well-served by additional strong programs training the next generation of policy professionals in this field,\u0026rdquo; wrote Karan Bhatia, vice president of government relations and public policy at Google. \u0026ldquo;Georgia Tech, with its well-regarded programs in city and regional planning, economics, and international affairs, and its global reach, is well-positioned to contribute usefully to addressing this need.\u0026rdquo;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAlexious Butler, development diplomat in residence at USAID and\u0026nbsp;recruiter for the organization, wrote, \u0026ldquo;the availability of graduate educational opportunities in global development in the USA is far from adequate to address the need. Additionally, the lack of global development graduate programs outside of the Washington, DC, and New York areas significantly limits the diversity of the students attending the programs. Therefore, I strongly support Georgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s initiative to create a Master of Science in Global Development.\u0026rdquo;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe 30-hour graduate program will take one calendar-year to complete for full-time students, which is unusual for degrees that prepare students for development work, said\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/planning.gatech.edu\/people\/bruce-stiftel\u0022\u003EBruce Stiftel\u003C\/a\u003E, Professor Emeritus in the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/planning.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ESchool of City and Regional Planning\u003C\/a\u003E. In this case, he believes it\u0026rsquo;s necessary to make the program as accessible as possible to mid-career and overseas students who often can\u0026rsquo;t get away for longer. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe new Master of Science\u0026nbsp;in Global Development \u0026ldquo;responds to the dire shortage of development professionals in the world\u0026rsquo;s fastest-growing regions,\u0026rdquo; Stiftel said, citing data from the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/commonwealthsustainablecities.org\/survey\/\u0022\u003ESurvey of the Built Environment Professions in the Commonwealth\u003C\/a\u003E.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch2\u003EAn Interdisciplinary Graduate Degree\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/h2\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe degree will require 15 hours of core courses and 15 hours of electives. Students also will complete a three-hour graduate capstone or planning studio course.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ERequired courses will include INTA\/ECON\/CP 6704: Introduction to Global Development, INTA 6603: Empirical Research Methods, and CP 6514: Introduction to GIS.
