{"657553":{"#nid":"657553","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Faces of Research: Meet Duen Horng \u0022Polo\u0022 Chau","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cem\u003EIDEaS\u0026nbsp;is one of Georgia Tech\u0026#39;s 10\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/em\u003E\u003Cem\u003Einterdisciplinary research\u0026nbsp;institutes within the Georgia Tech Research enterprise.\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWhat is your field of expertise and why did you choose it?\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\nGrowing up, I liked design as a hobby from\u0026nbsp;designing posters to\u0026nbsp;making websites, and I also liked engineering and computer science. As I was close to graduating with\u0026nbsp;my bachelor\u0026#39;s degree in Hong Kong, I discovered the field of human-computer interaction or\u0026nbsp;HCI. It\u0026#39;s\u0026nbsp;now well known, but not so much in the days when I was a student. HCI intersects computing, design, and psychology \u0026mdash; exactly what I wanted to learn more about for my master\u0026rsquo;s degree at Carnegie Mellon. My machine learning Ph.D.\u0026nbsp;thesis research intersected data mining and HCI, helping people make sense of large network datasets. Now as a faculty member, my group\u0026rsquo;s core research vision echoes a similar focus, taking the best of both worlds to\u0026nbsp;combine\u0026nbsp;what people and machines do best. I now work at the intersection of machine learning and visualization. My group innovates\u202fscalable, interactive, and interpretable\u202ftools that amplify a human\u0026#39;s ability to understand\u202fand interact with billion-scale data and machine learning models. Our current research thrusts include\u202fhuman-centered AI\u202f(interpretable, fair, safe AI);\u202flarge graph visualization and\u202fmining;\u202fcybersecurity; and\u202fsocial good.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWhat makes Georgia Tech research institutes unique?\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\nTheir breadth of the strategic areas that they cover and the researchers that they involve across the whole campus\u0026rsquo;s colleges and departments. The institutes are great reflections of the huge number and variety of talents at Georgia Tech.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWhat impact is your research having on the world?\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\nMy group has open-sourced and deployed many systems and tools over the years. Some recent examples include\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/poloclub.github.io\/cnn-explainer\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003ECNN Explainer\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;and\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/poloclub.github.io\/ganlab\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EGAN Lab\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;(with Google Brain): a\u0026nbsp;suite of accessible tools for students and experts alike to learn about AI models and now used in courses around the world. They also include\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1704.01942\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EActiVis\u003C\/a\u003E, a first visualization for\u0026nbsp;interpreting industry-scale AI models, and\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/fredhohman.com\/summit\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003ESummit\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;and\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/github.com\/poloclub\/bluff\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EBluff\u003C\/a\u003E, systems that scalably summarize and visualize what features a deep learning model has learned, how\u0026nbsp;those features interact to make predictions, and how they may be exploited by attacks.
