Brittain Fellows Present at American Conference on Irish Studies

Three Marion L. Brittain Postdoctoral Fellows from the School of Literature, Media, and Communication presented at the American Conference on Irish Studies held virtually from April 29–30, 2022.

Danielle Gilman presented her paper “Elizabeth Bowen’s Mid-Century Travel Writing” on a panel discussing connections between the fiction and non-fiction writing of the Anglo-Irish novelist Elizabeth Bowen.

Shinjini Chattopadhyay presented her paper “Multiculturalism and Celtic Tiger Ireland in Chris Binchy’s Open-Handed” on the panel “New Cultures of Irish Literature.”

In the paper, Chattopadhyay examines the multiculturalism of Celtic Tiger Ireland (mid-1990s to the late 2000s) in Chris Binchy’s 2008 novel Open-Handed and illustrates how immigrants in Ireland occasionally face hostility from certain Irish citizens while other Irish nationals welcome the cultural diversity.

Chattopadhyay also participated in a roundtable discussion titled “Pasts, Presents, and Podcasting in Irish Studies” alongside fellow Marion L. Brittain Fellow Eric Lewis. The discussion focused on podcasting as a new way for communicating academic content to the public during the pandemic and beyond.
