{"658397":{"#nid":"658397","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Recent Promotions in SoM","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EFive SoM faculty will receive promotions, with successful promotions\u0026nbsp;at all levels.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch3\u003EMichael Damron, Promoted to Full Professor\u003C\/h3\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.michaeldamron.org\/home\u0022\u003EDr. Michael Damron\u003C\/a\u003E came to Georgia Tech as an Assistant Professor in 2015 and became an Associate Professor in 2017. Prof. Damron\u0026#39;s research is in probability theory, with interests in percolation and particle systems and with research supported by an NSF grant and an NSF CAREER award.\u0026nbsp;Some examples of the random growth\u0026nbsp;models studied by Prof. Damron\u0026nbsp;include bacterial or tumor spread, and fluid flow through porous media.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EProf. Damron is a \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/math.gatech.edu\/news\/school-mathematics-associate-professor-now-kavli-fellow\u0022\u003EKavli fellow\u003C\/a\u003E (National Academy of Sciences) since 2019, and the organizer of several conferences including \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ams.org%2Fprograms%2Fresearch-communities%2Fmrc-19\u0026amp;sa=D\u0026amp;sntz=1\u0026amp;usg=AOvVaw1MU4U94GQ3Y3hSFB_e9k1O\u0022\u003EMathematics Research Communities\u003C\/a\u003E (2019) and \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http%3A%2F%2Fpwp.gatech.edu%2Frtip\u0026amp;sa=D\u0026amp;sntz=1\u0026amp;usg=AOvVaw0LiBEy_OMYKtA_eJNU4riA\u0022\u003ERecent Trends in Continuous and Discrete Probability\u003C\/a\u003E (2018). Prof. Damron is also a mentor to many past and current postdocs and graduate students including two current Ph.D. students and one postdoc.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch3\u003EJosephine Yu, Promoted to Full Professor\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/h3\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/people.math.gatech.edu\/~jyu67\/\u0022\u003EDr. Josephine Yu\u003C\/a\u003E first joined SoM in 2010 as an NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellow and became an\u0026nbsp;Assistant Professor the following year. Prof. Yu\u0026#39;s research lies in the area of Tropical Algebraic Geometry and its\u0026nbsp;applications to combinatorics, matroid theory, and analytic and computational geometry,\u0026nbsp;and since arriving at Tech her\u0026nbsp;work has been continually supported by the NSF. Prof. Yu has organized many conferences since 2011 including the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/sites.google.com\/view\/maag2019\/home\u0022\u003EMeeting on Applied Algebraic Geometry\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;in 2019, and the Computational \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/meetings.siam.org\/sess\/dsp_programsess.cfm?SESSIONCODE=62341\u0022\u003ETropical Geometry Minisymposium\u003C\/a\u003E at the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.siam.org\/meetings\/ag17\/\u0022\u003ESIAM Algebraic Geometry\u003C\/a\u003E meeting in 2017. Prof. Yu was also the Program co-chair of \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.siam.org\/conferences\/cm\/conference\/ag21\u0022\u003ESIAM AG21\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;and has served on the Advisory Board of MEGA (Effective Methods in Algebraic Geometry) since 2019.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EProf. Yu is also currently an Editor for two journals,\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/escholarship.org\/uc\/combinatorial_theory\u0022\u003ECombinatorial Theory \u003C\/a\u003Eand \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/msp.org\/astat\/about\/journal\/about.html\u0022\u003EAlgebraic Statistics\u003C\/a\u003E (AStat), is the Associate Editor for the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/msp.org\/jsag\/about\/journal\/about.html\u0022\u003EJournal of Software for Algebra and Geometry\u003C\/a\u003E (JSAG),\u0026nbsp;and was the Editor in Chief for the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.journals.elsevier.com\/journal-of-combinatorial-theory-series-a\u0022\u003EJournal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A\u003C\/a\u003E (JCTA) from 2018 until 2020.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn addition to her impressive research and organizational work, Prof. Yu has mentored three graduate students and two masters students including award winning graduate students \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/math.gatech.edu\/news\/ctl-celebrates-outstanding-teaching-assistants\u0022\u003ECvetelina Hill\u003C\/a\u003E and \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/math.gatech.edu\/news\/student-awards-2018-2019\u0022\u003EMarcel Celaya\u003C\/a\u003E.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch3\u003EMayya Zhilova, Promoted to Associate Professor with Tenure\u003C\/h3\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/people.math.gatech.edu\/~mzhilova7\/\u0022\u003EDr. Mayya Zhilova\u003C\/a\u003E began work at the School of Mathematics at Georgia Tech in 2016, and is an affiliate faculty member of the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/ml.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ECenter for Machine Learning at Georgia Tech\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;and the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/triad.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ETransdisciplinary Research Institute for Advancing Data Science (TRIAD)\u003C\/a\u003E. Prof. Zhilova\u0026#39;s\u0026nbsp;research interests lie in the areas of mathematical statistics, statistical learning theory, and uncertainty quantification, particularly in statistical inference for complex high-dimensional data, performance of resampling procedures for various classes of problems, functional estimation, and inference for misspecified models. Prof. Zhilova was awarded an NSF CAREER award in 2021 with a project which seeks to address challenging open questions in high-dimensional and nonparametric statistics motivated by practical applications in finance, engineering, and life sciences.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch3\u003ESal Barone, Promoted to Senior Academic Professional\u003C\/h3\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/sbarone7.math.gatech.edu\u0022\u003EDr. Sal Barone\u003C\/a\u003E first arrived at Georgia Tech in 2013 as a Hale Postdoctoral Fellow doing research in Real Algebraic Geometry, and became the school\u0026#39;s first Director of Communications (DoCSoM)\u0026nbsp;as an Academic Professional in 2017. With a clear passion for teaching, Dr. Barone has contributed to the service mission of SoM by coordinating Math 1554 Linear Algebra since Spring 2020, and has been the course coordinator for Math 1552 Calculus II as well as the lead instructor for nearly all the first year courses offered in SoM.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAs part of his role as DoCSoM, Dr. Barone designs and publishes the yearly \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/math.gatech.edu\/proofreader\u0022\u003EProofReader\u003C\/a\u003E magazine which features the goings-on of the renowned faculty and phenomenal students here in SoM. Dr. Barone also manages the SoM website and intranet content, and is the chair of the CDO committee which helps to organize the periodic \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/math.gatech.edu\/events\/stelson-lecture-2022\u0022\u003EStelson Lecture Series\u003C\/a\u003E.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch3\u003ENeha Gupta, Promoted to Senior Academic Professional\u003C\/h3\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDr. Neha Gupta came to SoM in 2018\u0026nbsp;as Director of Scheduling and an Academic Professional. Dr. Gupta has taught several\u0026nbsp;service level courses such as Math 1712 Survey of Calculus and GT1000, and\u0026nbsp;has been the course coordinator for Math 1551 since Fall 2018.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDr. Gupta has received several teaching awards including the CoS \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/math.gatech.edu\/news\/center-teaching-and-learning-recognizes-sciences-faculty-educational-excellence\u0022\u003EStudent Recognition of Excellence in Teaching: Honor Roll\u003C\/a\u003E in 2022 and the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/math.gatech.edu\/news\/college-sciences-faculty-students-staff-honored-2020-georgia-tech-faces-inclusive-excellence\u0022\u003ECIOS Student Recognition of Excellence in Teaching: Class of 1934 Award\u003C\/a\u003E in 2020. Dr. Gupta also serves as an academic advisor\u0026nbsp;for math majors, and so\u0026nbsp;interacts with some of the most diverse groups of students on campus.
