However, one School of Computational Science and Engineering (CSE) alumnus is well on his way to crafting his own legacy as one of the School\u0026rsquo;s most influential alumni.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EEarlier this month, CSE alumnus and current Apple research scientist \u003Cstrong\u003EFred Hohman\u003C\/strong\u003E received ACM SIGCHI\u0026rsquo;s 2022 Outstanding Dissertation Award for his dissertation, \u003Cem\u003EInteractive Scalable Interfaces for Machine Learning Interpretability\u003C\/em\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESIGCHI is the premier international society for the study of human-computer interaction and typically only presents two or three outstanding dissertation awards per year.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;It\u0026rsquo;s kind of unbelievable because you never expect this sort of thing to happen,\u0026rdquo; Hohman said. \u0026ldquo;I\u0026rsquo;m honored and still surprised to see my dissertation highlighted and recognized.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAlong with recognition at CHI 2022 this year, Hohman\u0026rsquo;s dissertation also earned him an award at the College of Computing\u0026rsquo;s 31st annual awards celebration held in April.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIf the recognition his dissertation has garnered wasn\u0026rsquo;t impressive enough, Hohman presented at CHI 2022 two other papers he co-authored. There, he received a best paper award for \u003Cem\u003ENeo: Generalizing Confusion Matrix Visualization to Hierarchical and Multi-Output Labels\u003C\/em\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;I\u0026rsquo;m humbled. My dissertation sits on the shoulders of giants, and there are many people that were inspirational and had similar ideas that influenced my work as well,\u0026rdquo; he said.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHohman describes his graduate experience and dissertation as humbling because of his apprehensiveness when he arrived at Georgia Tech in 2015. Though he graduated from the University of Georgia with bachelor\u0026rsquo;s degrees in mathematics and physics, Hohman didn\u0026rsquo;t know basic computer science skills like coding.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ECSE\u0026rsquo;s interdisciplinary nature interested Hohman to study at Tech in the first place. Access to faculty and students eased Hohman\u0026rsquo;s imposter syndrome, and he thrived as a graduate student.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Between the College of Computing, multiple schools, and labs, it was clear people valued collaboration.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHohman studied under School of CSE Associate Professor \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/faculty.cc.gatech.edu\/~dchau\/\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EPolo Chau\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E and School of Interactive Computing Associate Professor \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/va.gatech.edu\/endert\/\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EAlex Endert\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E. There, he was a member of Chau\u0026rsquo;s research group, the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/poloclub.github.io\/\u0022\u003EPolo Club of Data Science\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWhile at Georgia Tech, Hohman interned with the Pacific Northwest National Lab, the NASA Jet Propulsion Lab, Microsoft Research, and Apple. In fact, a \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/directorates\/spacetech\/strg\/nstgro\u0022\u003ENASA Space Technology Research Fellowship\u003C\/a\u003E supported his dissertation.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Those summer internships were foundational to my thinking, my dissertation, what I\u0026rsquo;m doing now and what I want to do in the future,\u0026rdquo; said Hohman. \u0026ldquo;That was another reason why I chose Georgia Tech and to work in Polo\u0026rsquo;s lab. I found myself bringing ideas back from each summer into the next academic year and incorporating them into my dissertation.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIt was around this time when Hohman began to distinguish himself as a scholar decorated in character, not just achievements. Just as he leaned on colleagues to grow confident at Georgia Tech, Hohman used his experience to help others.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDrawing from his experience as a tutor at UGA and graduate teaching assistant at Tech, Hohman independently mentored eight students during his time at Georgia Tech.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EEven more enduring is \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/fredhohman.com\/\u0022\u003EHohman\u0026rsquo;s website\u003C\/a\u003E where he shares most of his published work, including his dissertation. This includes \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/fredhohman.com\/dissertation\/\u0022\u003Evideos of his thesis defense and his award talk at CHI 2022\u003C\/a\u003E. This serves as a resource for aspiring scholars to replicate success in their own research efforts to this day.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe student body showed appreciation of Hohman\u0026rsquo;s leadership when they elected him as vice president of the School of CSE Graduate Student Association from 2018 to 2020.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;I am a strong believer in mentorship for younger students in the lab. I really wanted to try to give back from the mentorship I received from my internships,\u0026rdquo; Hohman said. \u0026ldquo;I think that I brought some of the Tech mentorship from Polo\u0026rsquo;s lab to Apple.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EToday, Hohman designs and develops interactive interfaces at Apple to help people understand machine learning models and data-driven systems. He also mentors Ph.D. students much like he did at Georgia Tech.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHohman continues to make a name for himself through his dissertation and other research.
