{"65894":{"#nid":"65894","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Land@GT Acclimates Exchange Students to Tech","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EAny student who has ever landed on foreign soil for an\nextended period of time knows the overwhelming feelings of disorientation and\nconfusion upon arrival. The Office of International Education (OIE) is looking\nfor Tech students who have studied abroad to serve as ambassadors to those\narriving to study at the Institute from other countries.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EOIE\u2019s Land@GT program will match up Tech students with\nexchange students arriving on campus in the fall, and asks participants to play\na role in helping these students feel connected to Tech and the U.S. during\ntheir time here. All Tech students who have studied abroad are invited to\nparticipate.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThe role of friends in an international\nstudent\u2019s experience cannot be undervalued, and the students will be so\ngrateful,\u201d said Sheri Beyer, International Student Advisor for OIE. \u201cTech\nstudents\u2019 ability to chat with the exchange students about American culture and\nto learn about their cultures will offer them a rich experience outside their\ncoursework and lectures.\u201d \u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003ETech student Brooke McDaniel felt the\nbenefit of assistance from local students when she studied for a semester in\nChina. About 30 Tianjin University students hosted and took classes with their\nAmerican visitors. \u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cHaving them around was incredibly\nhelpful,\u201d McDaniel said. \u201cI was met at the airport by one of the students to\nhelp find my way. Once we got to the University, they helped us find things to\ndo in the city, learn to communicate with taxi drivers, purchase train tickets\nand get cell phones.\u201d McDaniel still keeps in touch with one student who was\nparticularly helpful during the experience.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003ELand@GT participants are asked to greet their assigned students\nat the airport or soon after their arrival, help them get settled, attend a\nwelcome reception for all exchange students and coordinate a few other activities\nthroughout the semester. OIE provides Tech students with their exchange\ncounterpart\u2019s name, and from there asks Tech students to introduce themselves and\nuse OIE as a resource for questions along the way.
