This\u0026nbsp;group has developed thriving partnerships both in industry and government that led to research across a variety of ranging from\u0026nbsp;functional fabrics and\u0026nbsp;2D materials to\u0026nbsp;photovoltaics and\u0026nbsp;supercapacitors.\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cem\u003EThis installment of the Faces of Research Q\u0026amp;A series is\u0026nbsp;with\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/research.gatech.edu\/w-jud-ready-0\u0022\u003EJud Ready\u003C\/a\u003E, who leads the Nano group, is deputy\u0026nbsp;director of innovation initiatives\u0026nbsp;at Georgia\u0026nbsp;Tech\u0026#39;s\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/research.gatech.edu\/materials\u0022\u003EInstitute for Materials (IMat)\u003C\/a\u003E, and is an adjunct professor in the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.mse.gatech.edu\u0022\u003ESchool of Materials Science \u0026amp; Engineering\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWhat is your field of expertise and why did you choose it?\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\nI am a materials scientist.\u0026nbsp;I applied for admission to\u0026nbsp;Georgia Tech in 1989 for aerospace engineering.\u0026nbsp;I was declined admission to that major, but was instead\u0026nbsp;admitted to Tech as a\u0026nbsp;\u0026quot;UEC\u0026quot; (undecided engineering candidate).\u0026nbsp;A then-requirement of that \u0026quot;major\u0026quot; was to take three\u0026nbsp;one-hour courses in three\u0026nbsp;different majors during your freshman year to help you decide by your sophomore year what you wanted to do with your life.\u0026nbsp;The three\u0026nbsp;I chose were: \u0026nbsp;civil\u0026nbsp;engineering (CE), materials science engineering (MSE), and electrical engineering (EE).\u0026nbsp;After AE, MSE most\u0026nbsp;resonated with my interests of becoming\u0026nbsp;an\u0026nbsp;astronaut.\u0026nbsp; Microgravity materials science was my interest at the time, but my interests evolved\u0026nbsp;towards materials used in electronics,\u0026nbsp;and ultimately my\u0026nbsp;doctorate was on copper metallurgy\u0026nbsp;(corrosion of printed wiring\u0026nbsp;boards).\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWhat makes Georgia Tech research institutes unique?\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\nThe \u0026quot;embedded\u0026quot; connection to the academic side of Georgia Tech gives us an unfair advantage over our competitors by having so many innovative academic\u0026nbsp;resources (people, students,\u0026nbsp;labs, etc.) right at our fingertips.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWhat impact is your research having on the world?\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\nWe are in the final stages of integrating a spacecraft that will map the water-ice resources on the moon:\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.gtri.gatech.edu\/newsroom\/lunar-flashlight\u0022 id=\u0022LPlnk457214\u0022 rel=\u0022noopener noreferrer\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003Egtri.gatech.edu\/newsroom\/lunar-flashlight\u003C\/a\u003E.
