The influence of cognitive ability, resource depletion, task\u0026nbsp;utility, internal\u0026nbsp;distraction, and arousal on sustained attention.\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EAbstract:\u0026nbsp; \u003C\/strong\u003EThe ability\u0026nbsp;to sustain attention is critical for many\u0026nbsp;everyday tasks and is often seen as a fundamental factor underlying differences\u0026nbsp;in cognitive ability.\u0026nbsp;Therefore, it is important to understand: what are the\u0026nbsp;factors that influence how long we can voluntarily sustain our attention? I\u0026nbsp;will use a\u0026nbsp;novel sustained attention task to investigate how differences\u0026nbsp;between\u0026nbsp;individuals on various cognitive abilities is related to the ability to\u0026nbsp;sustain\u0026nbsp;attention over the short-term, in the range of seconds, and the long-term, in\u0026nbsp;range of minutes. A failure to sustain attention can be due\u0026nbsp;to one of several\u0026nbsp;factors. For instance, while some models of sustained attention emphasize the\u0026nbsp;depletion of resources as a source of\u0026nbsp;performance decrements over time, other\u0026nbsp;models highlight that diminishing task utility leads to greater disengagement\u0026nbsp;from the task in favor\u0026nbsp;of more rewarding activities. In a second study,\u0026nbsp;therefore, I will investigate how several factors influence sustained attention:\u0026nbsp;depletion of\u0026nbsp;resources, changes in task utility, susceptibility to internal\u0026nbsp;distraction, and changes in arousal. I will do this by manipulating task\u0026nbsp;utility with\u0026nbsp;a monetary reward and obtain measures of behavioral performance,\u0026nbsp;self-report thought probes, eye gaze, pupil size, and heart rate on a novel\u0026nbsp;sustained attention task.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n","summary":null,"format":"limited_html"}],"field_subtitle":"","field_summary":"","field_summary_sentence":[{"value":"What determines how long we can sustain our attention?
