There, they reflected upon the previous year while reaffirming the School\u0026rsquo;s vision for the new school year as a world-class, interdisciplinary academic unit.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;The School of CSE is a pioneer in the academic field of computational science and engineering,\u0026rdquo; said School of CSE Regents\u0026rsquo; Professor and Chair\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003EHaesun Park\u003C\/strong\u003E. \u0026ldquo;There are many universities with a presence of computational science and engineering, mostly in the form of a center or graduate program, but we are unique in that we have a school. Our School is an academic home for CSE.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EPark opened the retreat with a presentation where she reiterated the School of CSE\u0026rsquo;s mission to:\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cul\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003ESolve real-world problems and improve quality of life through advances in computational foundational research, modeling, methods, and techniques.\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EFoster collaboration and interaction to solve challenging problems in novel ways through interdisciplinary cooperation and broad partnerships.\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003ECreate leaders in academia, industry, research laboratories, and government who innovate, define, and advance computational science and engineering agendas.\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\u003C\/ul\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ETo help fulfill its mission, one primary goal the School seeks to accomplish this year is continue growing its faculty and student populations with emphasis on diversification.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe School finished fiscal year 2022 with 18 full-time and four joint faculty, which includes a surge of\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/cse.gatech.edu\/news\/650714\/school-cse-expands-five-new-faculty-hires\u0022\u003Efive new assistant professors\u003C\/a\u003E. This is an improvement from 2021 when the year finished with 13 full-time faculty.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe expansion in faculty yielded an increase in funded research projects. With a funding total exceeding $15 million, the School grew from 88 to 97 projects between 2021 and 2022.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAlong with increased research funding, the addition of more faculty allowed the School to enroll more students under its six doctorate and seven master\u0026rsquo;s degree programs. In December 2021 alone,\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/news\/graduating-class-reflects-interdisciplinary-nature-computational-science-and-engineering\u0022\u003Enearly 50 CSE students earned their degrees and graduated\u003C\/a\u003E, the one of the largest classes in School history.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe School of CSE students and recent alumni received numerous awards and accolades last year, setting high expectations for 2022-2023. CSE Ph.D. students\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003EPranav Shetty\u003C\/strong\u003E\u0026nbsp;and\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003EZijie (Jay) Wang\u003C\/strong\u003E\u0026nbsp;attained J.P. Morgan Chase AI research fellowships and CSE Ph.D. student\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003EGaurav Verma\u003C\/strong\u003E\u0026nbsp;received an Adobe Ph.D. fellowship. Recent School of CSE alumni\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003EFred Hohman\u003C\/strong\u003E\u0026nbsp;and\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003ESrinivas Eswar\u003C\/strong\u003E\u0026nbsp;received the SIGCHI Outstanding Dissertation Award and the J.H. Wilkinson Postdoctoral Fellowship at Argonne National Laboratory respectively.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ELocated in the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/coda.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ECoda building at Tech Square\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;on the south wing of the 13th floor, the School\u0026rsquo;s newest challenge is providing working areas to keep pace with the rapid student enrollment rate. Park announced at the retreat that the School recently acquired the 13th floor east wing, providing additional offices for faculty and staff as well as more student workspaces.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;CSE is central to the vision and the plans for the College,\u0026rdquo; said\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003ECharles Isbell\u003C\/strong\u003E, dean and John P.
