A\u0026nbsp;panel of judges including \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/iac.gatech.edu\/people\/person\/lisa-yaszek\u0022\u003ERegents\u0026rsquo; Professor Lisa Yaszek\u003C\/a\u003E and \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/iac.gatech.edu\/people\/person\/38db520b-2342-5ea8-a3e0-57b340e6d49a\u0022\u003EAssistant Professor Amanda Weiss\u003C\/a\u003E selected the winner.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EPinsker was one of five finalists for the award, which celebrates the best in literary speculative fiction. The judges noted her short story, \u0026ldquo;Where Oaken Hearts Do Gather\u0026rdquo; \u0026mdash; published in \u003Cem\u003EUncanny\u003C\/em\u003E \u003Cem\u003EMagazine \u0026mdash; \u003C\/em\u003Efor showcasing a distinct storytelling style.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;The committee was unanimous in its enthusiasm for both the content and presentation of the story, noting that Pinsker\u0026rsquo;s choice to present the terrifying tale of two historians\u0026rsquo; search for the truth behind a strange folk tale in the form of an online chat was a risk that paid off handsomely,\u0026rdquo; said Yaszek.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EPinsker received a commemorative pin, a plaque, and a $1,000 prize.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s relationship with Eugie Foster started in 2011 when Yaszek hosted a day-long science fiction symposium through the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/lmc.gatech.edu\u0022\u003ESchool of Literature, Media, and Communication\u003C\/a\u003E and invited Foster as guest of honor.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAfter the author\u0026rsquo;s passing in 2014, her husband, Matthew Foster, established the award and invited Yaszek to serve as a judge. Since then, Georgia Tech has remained heavily involved, including Matthew inviting \u003Cem\u003EPseudopod\u003C\/em\u003E\u0026nbsp;editor and Georgia Tech alumnus Alex Hoeflich to serve as a permanent member of the expert jury.
