This ability to sustain\u0026nbsp;attention\u0026nbsp;is critical for many everyday tasks and is often seen as a\u0026nbsp;fundamental factor underlying differences in cognitive ability. Therefore, it\u0026nbsp;is important to understand:\u0026nbsp;the factors that determine how long we can\u0026nbsp;voluntarily sustain our attention. Across two studies I developed a novel task, the\u0026nbsp;sustained attention-to-cue task (SACT),\u0026nbsp;to assess sustained attention. The\u0026nbsp;critical element of the task is to sustain attention at a cued location for a\u0026nbsp;variable amount of time (0 \u0026ndash; 12 seconds). In Study 1,\u0026nbsp;I investigated how\u0026nbsp;individual differences in cognitive ability are related to sustained attention.\u0026nbsp;I found that those higher on attention control showed less of a\u0026nbsp;decline in\u0026nbsp;performance the longer attention had to be sustained. However, sustained\u0026nbsp;attention performance was not related to working memory capacity or fluid\u0026nbsp;intelligence. In Study 2, I investigated how motivation, susceptibility to\u0026nbsp;distraction, and changes in arousal are related to sustained attention\u0026nbsp;performance on the\u0026nbsp;SACT. Overall, there was a large decline in attention on a\u0026nbsp;shorter timescale based on performance, eye gaze, pupil size, and mind\u0026nbsp;wandering measures. There\u0026nbsp;were no changes in attention at a longer timescale,\u0026nbsp;however there was strong evidence that arousal declined over the course of the\u0026nbsp;task.
