{"66332":{"#nid":"66332","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Officer Has Worked with Celebrities, Students","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EThere\u2019s one thing that Steven Spielberg, Al Pacino, Oprah and members of the Georgia Tech community all have in common \u2014 Alex Gutierrez has played a role in ensuring their safety.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp; \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cYears ago, I provided executive protection for everyone from royalty from countries that I had no idea still had royal families, three U.S. presidents and many other celebrities,\u201d said Gutierrez, who is a crime prevention officer in the Tech Police Department. \u201cI had a blast working in that industry.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAbout seven years ago, Gutierrez made the move from New York City to Atlanta to be closer to his now-wife, Alba. \u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EHe spent five years as a patrol officer at Tech, where he became interested in searching for, deciphering and cleaning up graffiti on campus. This work with graffiti lead to Gutierrez\u2019s current work in crime prevention. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ERecently, The Whistle sat down with Gutierrez to learn more about him and his time at Tech. Here\u2019s what we learned: \u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWhat does your job entail? What is something people don\u2019t know about your job that you\u2019d like to share?\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EI spend my days responding to inquiries about safety and security at Tech and presenting on topics ranging from crime prevention to drug awareness. My presentations aren\u2019t mandatory, so a lot of students and employees don\u2019t get a chance to hear what I have to say about safety and security. I want people to know that anyone can contact me to set up a presentation \u2014 I\u2019ll even tailor the topic to your needs.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWhat do you enjoy most and least about your job?\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp; \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EI enjoy meeting new people almost every day. The worst part is to find out that folks aren\u2019t practicing safety precautions and are making it easy for criminals to target them. So, every time I meet an individual I see it as an opportunity to educate them about safety. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWhat is the one piece of technology you couldn\u2019t live without?\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EMy Droid phone.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp; \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWhat are three things that everyone should do while working at Tech?\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003ERegister your bicycle and\/or laptop with the Tech Police Department (if you have one), visit our website and Facebook page, and always report suspicious activity.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWhere is the best place to grab lunch?\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EIt was Junior\u2019s Grill, and I\u2019d get a cheeseburger and fries. I was sad to see them close. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWhat are a few nonwork-related accomplishments that you\u2019re most proud of?\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EGetting married, completing the New York City Marathon and being a mentor to young adults.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ETell us more about your mentoring work. \u003C\/strong\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EIn partnership with Wheeler High School in Marietta, I became a mentor to a senior\u0026nbsp; for a semester. It was really rewarding to show him the reality of the job. \u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ETell us something unusual about yourself.\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EI\u2019m shy.
