{"667841":{"#nid":"667841","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Development Studies Conference Returns with Strong Showing","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Cspan\u003EThe Southeast Exchange of Development Studies (SEEDS) Conference returned to Georgia Tech after a two-year hiatus to a strong showing of development scholars eager to share the latest in their research.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Cspan\u003EAbout 50 scholars from across the country attended the two-day event held April 27-28, 2023, at the Exhibition Hall.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u201cThis is an interdisciplinary conference that is all about solving some very complex challenges around the world, and it nicely aligns with our focus in the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts on work that bridges disciplines and seeks to improve the human condition,\u201d said SEEDS founder Shatakshee Dhongde, associate dean for academic affairs and associate professor in the \u003C\/span\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/econ.gatech.edu\u0022\u003E\u003Cspan\u003ESchool of Economics\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E. \u201cIt provides a unique forum for development scholars in the southern U.S. to explore issues from various perspectives, and it also dovetails with our new Master of Science in Global Development, which seemed to generate a lot of excitement with the group.\u201d\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t\u0026amp;rct=j\u0026amp;q=\u0026amp;esrc=s\u0026amp;source=web\u0026amp;cd=\u0026amp;cad=rja\u0026amp;uact=8\u0026amp;ved=2ahUKEwj86cbi-IH_AhVLTDABHV6EDNYQFnoECBIQAQ\u0026amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fiac.gatech.edu%2Fpeople%2Fperson%2Fshatakshee-dhongde\u0026amp;usg=AOvVaw1TOfzvA3P-DsSLwoykTBcA\u0022\u003E\u003Cspan\u003EDhongde\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E co-chaired this year\u2019s event with Anjali Thomas of the \u003C\/span\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/inta.gatech.edu\u0022\u003E\u003Cspan\u003ESam Nunn School of International Affairs\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Cspan\u003EPresentation topics included education, policy analysis, sustainability and climate change, government, economic development, gender inequalities, and the impact of conflicts. The studies examined issues in Afghanistan, China, India, and other regions, including the United States.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Cspan\u003EDean Joliffe, a lead economist with the World Bank, delivered the keynote address and spoke about global poverty and efforts to understand and measure it.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Cspan\u003EThe event included 16 participants from Georgia Tech, including Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts faculty members Alberto Fuentes, Robert Gonzalez, Mayra Pineda-Torres, Olga Shemyakina, Dhongde, and Thomas, as well as postdoctoral researcher Erdal Asker and Ph.D. students Roshani Bulkunde, Ryan Ellis, Vikrant Kamble, and Shubhsri Rajendra.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Cspan\u003EOne key aspect of the conference is its focus on junior scholars.
