{"67733":{"#nid":"67733","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Important Information on Changes to Core Curriculum","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EChanges to the core curriculum were very recently implemented by the University System of Georgia and may affect your advising this summer and beyond.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n    \u003Cbr \/\u003E\n    \u003Cem\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EFirst and foremost, don\u0027t panic!\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/em\u003E\u0026nbsp; The changes are not\n    that large and do not require students to take any additional\n    courses, though they may affect \u003Cstrong\u003Ecourse selection\u003C\/strong\u003E and\n    \u003Cstrong\u003Etiming\u003C\/strong\u003E.\u0026nbsp; The Office of the Registrar is fully\n    committed to working with everyone--especially those students with\n    special circumstances--to make the transition to the updated core go\n    smoothly.\u0026nbsp; Below are the major changes of which you should be aware.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n    \u003Cbr \/\u003E\n    \u003Cstrong\u003E1.\u003C\/strong\u003E Although the original Core\n    Policy that was approved by the Board of Regents on October 14, 2009\n    stated that students would be required to complete the ENGL and MATH\n    courses required in Cores A1 and A2 within a specified number of\n    hours,\u003Cem\u003E the policy will be enforced only for freshmen\u003C\/em\u003E.\n    Therefore, effective Fall 2010 (for our freshmen admitted Summer\n    2010 and Fall 2010), there are new requirements for the timing of\n    the completion of Core Areas A1 and A2.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n    \u003Cbr \/\u003E\n    \u003Cstrong\u003E2.\u003C\/strong\u003E Freshmen admitted Summer 2010\n    or Fall 2010 are required to take ENGL 1101, ENGL 1102, and their\n    first required math classes (e.g., MATH 1501, 1712) \u003Cem\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003Ewithin\n        their first 60 credit hours at Georgia Tech\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/em\u003E.\u0026nbsp; \u003Cbr \/\u003E\n    \u003Cbr \/\u003E\n    If a student has hit the 60-hour mark and has any of these classes\n    outstanding, they must be taken in the next enrolled semester.\u0026nbsp; \u003Cstrong\u003EThe\n        60-hour requirement will be dropped to the first 45 hours for\n        freshmen admitted for Summer 2011 and Fall 2011 and to the first\n        30 hours for freshmen admitted Summer 2012 and Fall 2012.\u003C\/strong\u003E\n    So, for freshmen entering in Summer or Fall 2012, they must have\n    both English and their first math classes completed within their\n    first 30 hours at Georgia Tech.\u0026nbsp; \u003Cbr \/\u003E\n    \u003Cbr \/\u003E\n    Effective Summer 2011, the Office of the Registrar has implemented a\n    procedure\u0026nbsp; that will involve running reports to see how many\n    students have gone beyond 60 credit hours and not completed these\n    three required courses.\u0026nbsp; Information will be available soon for each\n    school, and the report will be made available to advisors.\u0026nbsp; The\n    Office of the Registrar is also working on a communication plan for\n    disseminating this information to students who are in violation of\n    the rule.\u0026nbsp; \u003Cem\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EThese\n        are not additional courses that are required.\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/em\u003E\u0026nbsp; Rather,\n    they impact the classes that students should choose to fulfill\n    existing humanities and social science requirements.\u0026nbsp; The U.S.\n    Perspective requirement is already being fulfilled by every Tech\n    student with HIST 2111, HIST 2112, INTA 1200, POL 1101, or PUBP\n    3000.\u0026nbsp; No additional class is required.\u0026nbsp; The new Global Perspective\n    overlay area means that every student must take at least one class\n    from the following list:\n    \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.catalog.gatech.edu\/students\/ugrad\/core\/gp.php\u0022\u003Ehttp:\/\/www.catalog.gatech.edu\/students\/ugrad\/core\/gp.php\u003C\/a\u003E.\u0026nbsp; \u003Cbr \/\u003E\n    \u003Cbr \/\u003E\n    Note that many of these classes also fulfill either a humanities or\n    a social science requirement, so a student can complete two\n    requirements (e.g., social science and global perspectives) with\n    just one course.\u0026nbsp; \u003Cstrong\u003EIn other words, \u0022double dipping\u0022 is allowed\n        in the case of the perspective overlays\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003E.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003E \u003C\/strong\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n    \u003Cbr \/\u003E\n    \u2022\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;
