{"68638":{"#nid":"68638","#data":{"type":"news","title":"CS Professors Enter Apps in FCC Open Internet Challenge","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EThe Federal Communications Commission is encouraging\ndevelopment of applications that help determine how \u201copen\u201d the Internet is\u2014and\nCollege of Computing faculty are responding to the challenge.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003ETwo associate professors in the School of Computer Science,\nConstantine Dovrolis and Nick Feamster, each have entered applications in the\nFCC Open Internet Apps Challenge. The contest, which runs until July 15, features\ntwo categories, one that will name winners selected by a panel of expert judges,\nand a second decided by a public vote.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EWinning apps will be those that best provide users with\ninformation about the extent to which their fixed or mobile broadband Internet\nservices are consistent with open Internet principles. Contest winners will be\ninvited to FCC headquarters in Washington to present their work and be honored.\u0026nbsp;\nAlso, winning apps and the research behind them will be featured on the FCC\u2019s\nwebsite and social media outlets.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThe College\u2019s submitted applications include:\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/challenge.gov\/challenges\/114\/submissions\/3133-bismark-a-broadband-internet-service-benchmark\u0022\u003EBISMark\u003C\/a\u003E\n(Feamster), or Broadband Internet Service benchMARK, a home-router platform\nthat allows users to continually monitor their network performance using\nmeasurements taken from the router itself.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/challenge.gov\/challenges\/114\/submissions\/3136-nano-network-access-neutrality-observatory\u0022\u003ENANO\u003C\/a\u003E\n(Feamster), or Network Access Neutrality Observatory, which identifies\nperformance degradations resulting from differential treatment of specific\nclasses of applications, users or destinations by the Internet service provider\n(ISP).\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/%7Epartha\/diffprobe\/shaperprobe.html\u0022\u003EShaperProbe\u003C\/a\u003E\n(Dovrolis), which detects whether an ISP is \u201ctraffic shaping\u201d: classifying\ncertain kinds of traffic as low priority and providing different levels of\nservice for them.
