{"69018":{"#nid":"69018","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Tech Building Construction Students Place Second in Heavy\/Civil Division of Competition","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech\u0027s student chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America placed second in the Heavy\/Civil Division of the 2006 Associated Schools of Construction Region II Student Competition in Charlotte, NC sponsored by the Carolinas AGC and Kiewit Southern Co.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe Georgia Tech team was composed of four Building Construction students, Steven Dunlop, Will Harrison, Randall Miller, and Heidi Schlansker, and two Civil Engineering students, Stephanie Shealey and Katherine Snedeker.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EDuring the competition, teams put together proposals for the demolition and re-paving scope of a three-phase project at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport\u0027s Runway 4 in just fourteen and half hours. The project required the students to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the contract documents, estimating, scheduling, profit margin analysis, indirect cost evaluation, and ability to present the project to a panel of owners.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u0022The Georgia Tech team not only met the strict technical requirements of the proposal but also delivered a highly professional presentation. This was a tremendous accomplishment for these students and Georgia Tech,\u0022 said Daniel Castro, Assistant Professor of Building Construction and team coach. \u0022Although it was our first time competing in the Heavy\/Civil Division, their commitment to teamwork, leadership was outstanding.\u0022\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech competed against eight student chapters from across the southeast region including Auburn University, University of Florida, Clemson University, Georgia Southern University, University of North Carolina, Southern Polytechnic State University, and Western Carolina University among others in the region II competition.
