Tech Building Construction Students Place Second in Heavy/Civil Division of Competition

Georgia Tech's student chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America placed second in the Heavy/Civil Division of the 2006 Associated Schools of Construction Region II Student Competition in Charlotte, NC sponsored by the Carolinas AGC and Kiewit Southern Co.

The Georgia Tech team was composed of four Building Construction students, Steven Dunlop, Will Harrison, Randall Miller, and Heidi Schlansker, and two Civil Engineering students, Stephanie Shealey and Katherine Snedeker.

During the competition, teams put together proposals for the demolition and re-paving scope of a three-phase project at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport's Runway 4 in just fourteen and half hours. The project required the students to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the contract documents, estimating, scheduling, profit margin analysis, indirect cost evaluation, and ability to present the project to a panel of owners.

"The Georgia Tech team not only met the strict technical requirements of the proposal but also delivered a highly professional presentation. This was a tremendous accomplishment for these students and Georgia Tech," said Daniel Castro, Assistant Professor of Building Construction and team coach. "Although it was our first time competing in the Heavy/Civil Division, their commitment to teamwork, leadership was outstanding."

Georgia Tech competed against eight student chapters from across the southeast region including Auburn University, University of Florida, Clemson University, Georgia Southern University, University of North Carolina, Southern Polytechnic State University, and Western Carolina University among others in the region II competition. First place in the division was awarded to Auburn University.
