Music Technology Symposium Resonates Among Educators, Composers

Changing Tunes: Expanding Music through Technology was the theme of this year's College of Architecture Dean's Symposium on the Changing Nature of Practice. Held on March 3, 2007, this year's event focused on the emerging developments in music technology that promise to revolutionize musical performance, composition, analysis, and education.

Director of Music Technology and Associate Professor Gil Weinberg was pleased with the success of the symposium. "We were very happy with the caliber of speakers, the high attendance, and the inspiring discussions that were generated at the Changing Tunes symposium," said Weinberg. "The Music Department regards the international, national, and local interest in the symposium as a great jump-start for our new graduate degree in music technology."

The symposium included sessions on music education, cognition, performance, and the relationship between music and architecture. The attendees came from the music industry, other universities, the public school system, and the Georgia Tech alumni family. Presenters included Georgia Tech Professors Parag Chordia, Athanassios Economou, Jason Freeman, Ronald Lewcock, Jerry Ulrich, Bruce Walker, Gil Weinberg, and Music Department Director Frank Clark.

Other presenters included David Huron, The Ohio State University; George Lewis, Columbia University; Henry Panion III, University of Alabama-Birmingham; Thomas Rudolph, director of music at the School District of Haverford (Pennsylvania) Township; Pierre Ruhe, music critic for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution; and Jessica Peek Sherwood, Sonic Generator (flutist). These scholars and practitioners discussed ideas and demonstrated developments in areas ranging from new interfaces for musical expression and algorithmic composition to music information retrieval, music networks, and machine musicianship.

"The Dean's Symposium was a wonderful event with a number of substantive outcomes," said Frank Clark, director of the Music Department. "Each year the event brings hundreds of visitors to the Tech campus, produces meaningful scholarship, generates debate, adds to our visibility and credibility, and celebrates the diversity and richness of the Georgia Tech College of Architecture."

The Dean's Symposium series is an annual event jointly sponsored by the College of Architecture and its Alumni Committee. An extensive summary of this year's Changing Tunes will appear in the center scholarly section of the fall 2007 newsletter.
