New to Georgia Tech, Zimride offers a carpool matching system for members of the campus community seeking\na partner with whom to share the ride.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EWhile public carpool matching sites exist for the metro\narea, Zimride\u0027s exclusivity allows students, faculty and staff to\nfind fellow riders or drivers who they know are affiliated with campus.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cOther services are good for the region but don\u2019t really fit\nthe needs of the Institute or many users\u2019 safety concerns,\u201d said Aaron Fowler,\nalternative transportation coordinator for Parking and Transportation. Zimride incorporates\nsocial media to help users gets from their origin to their destination.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EWith Zimride, users create an online profile with their\nstart and end points and are provided with matches, similar to the workings of an\nonline dating service.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThe number one thing to do when you sign up is to put up a\nphoto \u2014 it increases the likelihood of finding a ride and exemplifies to other\nusers that you\u2019re a real person,\u201d said Paul Thompson with Zimride. Because\nZimride is created for either recurring rides, such as a daily commute, or\none-time rides, Thompson said students in areas with other universities in\nclose proximity have also used the service to travel between campuses. In the\nAtlanta area, Zimride has already set up shop at Emory and Kennesaw State\nuniversities and is in progress with the University of Georgia.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EA recent commuter survey by Parking and Transportation\nrevealed that the main reason commuters drive alone to campus is that they do\nnot have or know where to find a carpool match.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cWe\u2019ve always had a pretty strong carpooling program, but ran\ninto a limitation when people called wanting to find someone to rideshare with \u2014\nwe didn\u2019t have that capability,\u201d said David Williamson, associate director for\ntransportation in Parking and Transportation. \u201cWe want to provide alternatives\nand good choices for people, and Zimride makes it a little more convenient for\nthose looking for an alternative.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EZimride\u2019s Georgia Tech website is live at\n\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/zimride.gatech.edu\u0022\u003Ezimride.gatech.edu\u003C\/a\u003E, and enable signup using the Georgia Tech Central\nAuthentication System (CAS) or Facebook.
