As an agent of change, I use the collaborative process to envision possibilities, imagine new paradigms, involve colleagues in a variety of disciplines and institutions, and develop student ownership in the process of rehearsal, performance, and research. This comprehensive approach is often counterintuitive to the more “traditional” single-focused conservatory curricula. But music in general, and choral music in particular, is an ideal medium for cultural interface, interdisciplinary experiences, cross-campus interactions, and individual growth. Permeating this collaborative fabric, the philosophical drivers of diversity and inclusion are vital and recurring themes. Choral program innovation and development, composition and arranging, and presentation/guest conducting are my primary areas of focus. Although separate, they are distinctly interrelated and have consistently proven to be the most effective vehicles for realizing my creative goals.

Recent Publications

Ulrich, J. My work is driven by a continual exploration of how music has been meaningful to me — as a composer, as a performer, and as a listener. In short, I write music not to express ideas but to share experiences.

Driven by these motivations, I often create music that moves beyond the printed score. The context within which the work exists, along with my relationship to its performers and listeners, are important design elements. The dynamic process by which we collaboratively create the work’s musical content — through live audience participation or in online environments — can be as important to me as any specific musical product that may result.

In these works, technology is never an end in itself. It is a means by which to accomplish an artistic goal. My research in computer vision, real-time music notation, and networked music enables me to create collaborative experiences with performers and audiences via novel input interfaces, via algorithms which process that input, and via output mechanisms that generate sound or communicate with musicians.

Research Groups/Labs

Georgia Tech Center for Music Technology

GVU Center

Distributed Music Group

Sonic Generator

Journal Articles

J. His Ph.D. research focused on acoustics—in particular hospital acoustics and the effects the noise has on the staff and patients. Timothy's current research interest lies in historically informed acoustics. As a cross-section between acoustics, musicology, and architecture, his research group is attempting to recreate the acoustics of historic venues and to look at how the acoustics may have affected composition and/or performance practice of the day.
