{"71403":{"#nid":"71403","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Benefits Team Advocates for Employees","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EWhen the Board of Regents (BOR) shared its 2012 benefits decisions, Tech\u2019s benefits team knew it had its work cut out for it. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cMany of Tech\u2019s benefits are provided through the University System of Georgia, (USG),\u201d said Darlene Wright, director of employee benefits. \u201cAnd a lot of behind-the-scenes work goes into advocating for our employees and providing strong benefits options.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EOne notable change for 2012 is that eligible employees who work between 20 to 29 hours per week will no longer be eligible for benefits; however, they will still earn vacation and sick time and be eligible to participate in all retirement plans. Employees must now work at least 30 hours a week to receive benefits.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cWe made frequent calls to the USG seeking approval to broaden this new requirement to include employees who work an average of 75 percent time over the course of the year,\u201d Wright said. \u201cAnd we were successful.\u201d\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe 75 percent addition will primarily benefit faculty members and researchers at the Institute, but it ensures that a larger group of employees may maintain health coverage. Also, Wright\u2019s team has proactively identified employees who are affected by this upcoming change. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cWe are reaching out to employees who are impacted by these changes so that we can provide them with individual guidance and resources to explore individual coverage options,\u201d said Kim Watkins, benefits manager.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe BOR passed other significant changes for 2012, including increasing medical premiums, freezing enrollment into the HMO plans and discontinuing the BOR PPO and the BOR Health Savings Account (HSA) PPO.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThe BOR decisions reflect the negative economic reality that we are all facing,\u201d Wright said. \u201cOur goal is to educate and provide guidance to Tech employees to ensure everyone is equipped to make the best decisions as they relate to their benefits. We want Tech employees to know that we are working hard for them.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThat\u2019s why offering several voluntary benefits specific to Tech employees is important to Wright and her team.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EFor example, a new, enhanced vision plan through EyeMed will be replacing the existing vision plan offered through United Health Care\/Spectera. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAlso, the Tech benefits team has created a new Bank at Work program, in partnership with Bank of America, Georgia United Credit Union, State Bank \u0026amp; Trust and Wells Fargo. The new annual maximum is lower than the yearly combined maximums, so employees potentially save money on future prescriptions.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EEmployee Eligibility for Medical Plans.\u003C\/strong\u003E Employees must work a minimum of 30 hours per week (currently 20) and\/or an average of 75 percent time over the course of a year to be eligible for benefits. Employees who do not meet the new eligibility requirements will continue to be eligible for vacation\/sick accruals and participation in the retirement plans.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EMedical Coverage Premiums.\u003C\/strong\u003E All medical premiums will increase. Employees may contribute up to $5,000 to a dependent care FSA. Honor Roll\nrecognition for four-year colleges was given to the 10 institutions in each\nsize division that were cited most often across all of the recognition\ncategories.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EFor example, relating to the facilities, workspaces and\nsecurity category, during the past 15 years, Georgia Tech has constructed and\nrenovated many campus facilities that serve as a vital backdrop for providing\nan innovative live, learn and work environment, including a significant\ninvestment in the human and ecological landscape.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThe campus has also increased its focus on sustainability, establishing\nbuilding standards for environmental stewardship, sustainable design and energy\nmanagement and requiring that all building and renovation projects be designed\nand built to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold standards.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cWe are absolutely honored to have been selected for this\nrecognition, but we are not content to rest on our laurels,\u201d said Morris. \u201cOur\ngoal is to be recognized in each of the twelve dimensions outlined in the\nsurvey.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003ETwo other Georgia colleges were included on the 2011 Honor\nRoll. Brenau University, Gainesville, Ga., was recognized in the small, four-year\ncategory, while East Georgia College in Swainsboro, Ga., was recognized in the\nsmall, two-year category.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EAccording to The Chronicle, the assessment process had two\ncomponents: a questionnaire about institutional characteristics and a\nfaculty\/staff questionnaire about individuals\u0027 evaluations of their\ninstitutions. The assessment also included an analysis of demographic data and\nworkplace policies at each participating college or university. The\nquestionnaires were administered online in March and April of this year.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003ESurvey respondents were asked to respond to 60 statements\nusing a five-point scale, ranging from \u0022strongly agree\u0022 to\n\u0022strongly disagree.\u0022 They were also asked to rate their satisfaction\nwith 18 benefits, respond to two open-ended questions, and answer 15\ndemographic questions.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cGreat Colleges to Work For\u201d is one of the largest and most\nrespected workplace-recognition programs in the country.
