<![CDATA[Bioengineering Seminar - Sarah Heilshorn, PhD - Stanford University]]> 27224 Protein-based polymeric materials are characterized bymulti-functionality, complex structural diversity, and bioactivity.Using protein-based biomaterials may substantially increase theefficacy of regenerative medicine therapies by providing cell-proteininteractions that guide cell behavior. Several examples ofprotein-based biomaterials design will be presented to highlight theimportance of independent control over biochemical and biomechanicalproperties. Using recombinant protein technology, we have synthesizedseveral families of block-co-peptide hydrogels that mimic criticalaspects of the natural extracellular matrix. A modular design strategyenables independent tuning of the initial elastic modulus, the densityof cell adhesion ligands, and the rate of proteolytic remodeling. Thesebiomaterials can be designed to release multiple therapeutic peptideswith distinct spatial and temporal delivery profiles. Protein-basedmaterials can also be used as templates to guide the synthesis ofinorganic nanomaterials. Specifically, we are utilizing the proteinclathrin, which has the ability to form multiple 2D and 3Darchitectures, as a flexible template that can be functionalized atspecific sites using designed bi-functional peptides. These peptidesserve as molecular bridges between binding sites on the clathrinprotein and inorganic materials including gold, titania, and cobaltoxide. By generating a family of engineered peptides, we are developinga flexible, modular system that will enable the rapid development ofmultiple inorganic nanostructures from a single protein templatematerial.

]]> <![CDATA[2011 BIO Vendor Showcase]]> 27195 IBB, with the Bioengineering and Bioscience Unified Graduate Student group (BBUGS), will host its annual Vendor Showcase at Georgia Tech on Thursday, September 8, 2011 in the IBB atrium. 35+ plus companies will be on hand to display and demonstrate their equipment and research techniques thereby offering a great opportunity for faculty and staff to learn about new products as well.

Donated items by vendors will be raffled for attendees throughout the showcase.

Last year, over 250 students attended from all Georgia Tech departments and interacted with company representatives from over 25 companies.

In the days and weeks before the Career Fair, we will host panel discussions featuring Georgia Tech alumni and their industry experiences, corporate information sessions, and professional development seminars for both undergraduate and graduate students. We will also have a Student Resume Database that will be accessible exclusively to companies that have registered for the fair.

"Quantitative Screening of C. elegans using Microfluidic Devices and Adaptive Algorithm"

Forward genetic screening is a powerful tool to identify components in pathways in model organisms such as the nematode C. elegans. We use a single-layer microlfuidic device and quantitative analysis to screen a large number of animals in a high-throughput manner. This technology allows us to identify rare mutants that are difficult to find by eye. In a screen, we found many mutants that act to regulate tryptophan hydroxylase.

"Fightfor the Niche: Invasive Breast Cancer Cells Influence Msc Differentiation andSurvival in a Co-Culture Model"

When metastatic tumors reach the bone marrow the cancer cells will alter the microenvironment to promote their survival. Studies have shown a link between increased fatty bone marrow and a risk of cancer. The protease cathepsin K is associated with adipocyte differentiation and is upregulated in cancer. We hypothesized that cancer cells are promoting adipogenesis using cathepsin remodeling of the ECM as a mechanism to alter the microenvironment. 


The Graduate and Post-Doc (GaP) Seminar Series is a weekly event of research presentations by two graduate students or post-docs conducting bio-related research.  The series is organized and sponsored by the Parker H. Petit Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience (IBB) with additional support from the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering. It is held every Wednesday at 12:00pm in IBB 1128 and refreshments are provided.
