  <title><![CDATA[September Is Emergency Preparedness Month]]></title>
  <body><![CDATA[<p>A tornado has just ripped through Midtown and the Georgia Tech campus. The electricity has been knocked out and there are people trapped in the rubble, which is everywhere and making it impossible to get anywhere. Would you be prepared? &nbsp;</p><p>In September, the Office of Emergency Preparedness aims to provide a range of resources to help members of the Tech community become better prepared for situations just like this. &nbsp;</p><p>“You never know what might happen,” said Andy Altizer, director of emergency preparedness. “Preparedness is everyone’s responsibility.” &nbsp;</p><p>Throughout the month, members of the campus community can learn more about preparedness at the following times:</p><ul><li>Sept. 8: An information booth will be set up at the Student Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Get tools and resources for emergency planning, and meet the emergency preparedness team.</li><li>Sept. 20: A class titled “Identifying Safe Shelter Areas in Your Building” will be held at 2 p.m. Register <a href="http://www.training.gatech.edu">here</a>. Also, an information booth will be set up at the Student Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.</li><li>Sept. 21: A class titled “Weather Hazards and Precautions Class” will be held at 9 a.m. Register <a href="http://www.training.gatech.edu">here</a>. </li></ul><p>“People who take a little time to make sure they’re prepared are the people that survive during a catastrophic event,” Altizer added. “Even in smaller events, they find themselves better prepared, and possibly less miserable following an event, such as a power outage.”</p><p>For more information, email <a href="mailto:jennifer.mattingly@police.gatech.edu">jennifer.mattingly@police.gatech.edu</a>.
