Bike Ride Saturday to Honor Professor Killed by Motorist

Friends, family and bike-safety enthusiasts will embark on a
ride this Saturday at 9 a.m. around Midtown Atlanta in remembrance of Kurt
Frankel, assistant professor in Georgia Tech’s School of Earth and Atmospheric
Sciences. Frankel, 33, was struck and killed as he was riding his bicycle on
the shoulder of U.S. 98 in Walton County, Florida in July. He was wearing a
helmet when he was hit.

In addition to being an earthquake expert who was eager to share
his expertise with anyone, Frankel was also an avid cyclist. More than 100
people are expected to take part in the ride.

“Since Kurt was such an outdoor
enthusiast and avid biker, I thought it would be a fitting and appropriate
opportunity to take a tragic loss and try to use it as a learning experience
and to encourage biker safety and awareness,” said ride organizer Ken Peebles,
administrative professional at Tech’s School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences.
“Riders are being encouraged to wear bright clothes, lights, as well as helmets
so everyone can see us and we will all be safe.”

The ride is just one of the ways
that Frankel’s colleagues and students are remembering him this week. On
Friday, a tree will be planted in the courtyard of the Ford Environmental Sciences
and Technology building (Ford ES&T) in honor of Frankel. In addition, a
classroom in that building will be named after him.

A Ride for Kurt
