Students will show music and choreographies they have created for the robotic FOREST installation at the Caddell Building Flex Space.

Weather permitting, the concert will be viewed from outside the building through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows. In the event of inclement weather a small group of masked audience members may enter the Flex Space to experience the concert inside the building.

Abstract: Is music dead? Whilst figures in the commercial music industry bemoan the loss of sense of purpose in contemporary music and the role of the Internet in sidelining music as a political force, I contend that new technologies hold the key to reinvigorating music’s social role. In this talk I suggest that mutual engagement is key to creating new forms of multi-user social music systems which will capture the public’s heart and imagination. I propose a number of design features which support mutual engagement, and a set of techniques for evaluating mutual engagement by examining the minutiae of inter-person communication. We suggest how these techniques could be used in empirical studies, and how they might inform artistic practice to design and evaluate new forms of collaborative music making.

Bio: Bryan-Kinns is a Reader in Interaction Design and Deputy Dean for Science and Engineering at Queen Mary, University of London. He is a Fellow of the British Computer Society and leads Interactional Sound and Music in the Centre for Digital Music. Bryan-Kinns has published award winning international journal and conference papers on his funded research on mutual engagement, cross-modal interaction, and tangible interfaces. His research is reported in publications such as the New Scientist, and media outlets such as BBC, and exhibited at venues such as the Science Museum, London. Bryan-Kinns holds a Royal Academy of Engineering Industrial Secondment in recognition of his work on commercialising academic research. He was a panel member for the National Science Foundation’s CreativeIT funding panel, and provided expert consultation for the European Commission’s funding of Creativity and ICT. He chairs the ACM Creativity, Cognition and Art Community, was involved in two research networks focusing on the art-computer cross-over and future design, chaired the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) Creativity and Cognition conference 2010, and co-chaired the British Computer Society (BCS) international HCI conference 2006. Dr. Bryan-Kinns is a recipient of the ACM Recognition of Service Award, and BCS Recognition of Ten years service. In 1998 he was awarded a Ph.D. in Human Computer Interaction from the University of London.

Twenty-two inventors, composers and designers representing 14 nations were selected to present their new instruments at this year’s competition. They were selected from a pool of over 80 applicants from 20 countries — the most competitive pool in the history of the competition. Instruments will be judged on their musicality, design, and engineering by an expert panel comprised of David Zicarelli (founder and CEO of Cycling ’74), Chris Moore (composer, performer and Georgia Tech professor), and Young Guru (Grammy-nominated engineer to Jay-Z).

The instruments featured in the 2014 competition range from cutting edge to bizarre, and all expand the notion of what a musical instrument can be. This year’s competitors have presented us with interactive musical spheres, compositional cyborgian appendages, and a chorus of bubbles, to mention just a few. “This competition has become one of the premier events that showcase the future of music,” said Gil Weinberg, director of the Georgia Tech Center for Music Technology. “We are pleased that it continues to grow, each year bringing more and more innovative and creative inventors from all over the world together to have their ideas evaluated by our expert panel.”

Wired.com has called it the “X-Prize for music,” and contestants have likened it to a TED Conference for new musical instrument designers. Peter Kirn of Create Digital Music observed that in “the crowded world of new instrument design, the Margaret Guthman Musical Instrument Competition has emerged as a key prize for the best work, with creations battling fiercely for attention.”

The 2014 Margaret Guthman Musical Instrument Competition, now in its sixth year, will be held February 20th and 21^st, 2014 at the Klaus Advanced Computing Building, 266 Ferst Drive on the Georgia Tech campus. A host of international artists, musicians and inventors are creating Dithyrambalina – a landmark village of musical, playable houses. Invented instruments embedded into the walls, ceilings, and floors of Dithyrambalina’s architecture will support boundary-breaking musical performances and inspire wonder, exploration and invention in visitors of all ages. This New Orleans Airlift project is the evolving brainchild of artists Swoon, Delaney Martin, Taylor Lee Shepherd and Jay Pennington in collaboration with over 100 more artists and musicians to date. George Tzanetakis is an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science with cross-listed appointments in ECE and Music at the University of Victoria, Canada. He is Canada Research Chair (Tier II) in the Computer Analysis and Audio and Music and received the Craigdaroch research award in artistic expression at the University of Victoria in 2012. In 2011 he was visiting faculty at Google Research. He received his Ph.D. in computer science at Princeton University in 2002 and was a post-doctoral fellow at Carnegie Mellon University in 2002-2003. His research spans all stages of audio content analysis such as feature extraction, segmentation, classification with specific emphasis on music information retrieval. He is also the primary designer and developer of Marsyas an open source framework for audio processing with specific emphasis on music information retrieval applications. His pioneering work on musical genre classification received a IEEE signal processing society young author award and is frequently cited. More recently he has been exploring new interfaces for musical expression, music robotics, computational ethnomusicology, and computer-assisted music instrument tutoring. These interdisciplinary activities combine ideas from signal processing, perception, machine learning, sensors, actuators and human-computer interaction with the
connecting theme of making computers better understand music to create more effective interactions with musicians and listeners.

Students in the School of Industrial Design will have just finished a 3-day design BLITZ -- a fast-paced exercise to learn skills to take their creativity to the next level. What’s the design challenge? Given one pumpkin, an inspiring designer, and an iterative design process, how can they:

• Truly exploit the material of the pumpkin?
• Capitalize on the day/night transformation?
• Reinterpret a theme?
• Craft with precision?

Thursday evening, spectators will be able to choose a best-in-show from 60 pumpkins with a monetary vote of a quarter or more. The winner will be announced at 8:30 that evening. The money will help to fund future IDSA student projects.

Everyone is invited to this IDSA fall kick-off event. Meet fellow students, faculty, and practitioners. Play a bit of Pictionary Sketchoff – ID style!  Come to learn about IDSA plans for the upcoming school year, and have a ton of fun!

Women in Music Tech is the first student organization of the department, created to encourage women to enter the world of Music Tech and promote the work o f women in the field. The concert will feature OFFAL, the female international laptop orchestra with their piece Union. They will create the soundscape from their studios, scattered around the globe (all of this is live!), and one of them will be integrating all of their musics on stage. Another piece that will show you what Music Technology is about is Do the Buzzer Shake, with Anna Xambo, where members of the audience will be creating music with their smartphones. The Women’s Choir and Nothing but Treble willl also perform this night, and we will be bringing technology to add a twist to their songs. 

We would like to warmly thank the membership club Sandbox ATL that offered for The Garage to be our venue, we are really thrilled to perform in such an interesting site of gathering. We are also extremely grateful to the School of Music, the College of Design, the ADVANCE Program, and the Women’s resource center who supported us greatly and made this wonderful event evolve from idea to reality. We also thank our collaborators Georgia Tech Center for the Arts and Institute Diversity.

Attendees can enjoy viewing artwork from the MOCA GA permanent collection while listening to an interesting range of music, including seminal works by two generations of American minimalist composers — Steve Reich’s Cello Counterpoint and Michael Gordon’s ACDC. The concert also features the Atlanta premiere of Georgia Tech professor Jason Freeman’s Shadows. The composition, created by Freeman during a residency at IRCAM (the computer music research institute at the Pompidou Center in Paris), uses novel machine listening and algorithmic notation techniques to modify the musical score as it is being performed. The concert also includes music by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Harbison, Dutch experimental pop-art composer JacobTV, and Nico Muhly, an emerging New York composer currently completing a commission for the Metropolitan Opera.

Live coding is the practice of real-time music improvisation using computer code. Laptop performers write code on the fly, in performance, to define the algorithms that generate the music, all as the audience watches a projection of the performer’s screen. These are just a few of the 22 inventions in the annual Margaret Guthman Musical Instrument Competition. The competition, hosted by the Georgia Institute of Technology, showcases the best new ideas in design, engineering and musicianship. Contestants compete for $10,000 in prizes. Our semi finalistic are all inventors, musicians, designers, engineers, who bring their interdisciplinary skills and talents and the next generation of musical instruments. said Gil Weinberg, director of the Georgia Tech Center for Music Technology. The Center, along with the School of Music, the College of Architecture and the Office of the Arts sponsor the competition, which is in its eighth year. Competition entrants are using technology and scientific discovery to create nontraditional sounds and musical interactions that can enhance the way society plays and thinks about musical instruments.  Some of the semi-finalists resemble sleek, modern sculptures that belong in museums. Others look like they assembled in the land of misfit toys. Judging the semi-finalists are: Alan Kozinn, a music critic and teacher; Pat Metheny, a Grammy award-winning jazz guitarist and composer; and Marcelo Wanderly, professor of music technology at McGill University in Montreal.

The Guthman Competition will be held March 2 and 3 at Georgia Tech’s Ferst Center for the Arts. The finals, which will be held at 7:00 pm on March 3, are free and open to the public. John Biggs, an editor with TechCrunch, will host the finale.

Sonic Generator, Georgia Tech’s acclaimed chamber music ensemble in residence, joins forces with Ensemble Variances, a French contemporary music group renowned for its eclectic performances, for an evening of innovative music by French and American composers.

The program will feature a 15-musician cast introducing pieces by American composer Lisa Bielawa (performing here as a guest vocalist), French composer Thierry Pécou (director of Ensemble Variances), American composer and percussionist Andy Akiho, and a performance of Steve Reich’s Pulitzer-Prize winning Double Sextet.

The concert, a celebration of the ongoing cultural and scientific collaborations between Georgia Tech and its partners in Metz, France, is part of France-Atlanta 2015 and is the kickoff event of Sonic Generator’s 10th anniversary season.

At the crossroads of different styles and esthetics, Ensemble Variances’ musical creations are a blend of space, movement and music performed in various musical formations. Described as a “French cross-genre jazz-classical-world music” ensemble, Ensemble Variances – under the direction of founder, composer and pianist Thierry Pécou – consists of outstanding soloists and chamber musicians willing to create music around the unexpected and to experiment with it. The ensemble is in residence at L’Arsenal in Metz, France and is touring North America for the first time this fall.

Sonic Generator, Georgia Tech’s contemporary chamber music ensemble-in-residence, explores the ways in which technology can transform how we create, perform and listen to music.  Over the next few months, the IT Master Planning team will gather input from the campus community to determine how technology is not only impacting the campus today, but also how future technologies will support, enable and influence Georgia Tech's  academic, research and business mission.   

To introduce the project to campus and to generate discussion, three information meetings have been scheduled for the GT community.  During these town hall meetings, attendees will learn about the project’s goals and objectives and how they can participate in the planning process.

The concert features music by Michael van der Aa, the winner of the 2012 Grawemeyer Award – one of the world’s most prestigious composition prizes.  In van der Aa’s Oog, for cello and tape, pre-recorded cello sounds are transfigured to create an exciting dialogue with live cello.  Nathan Davis’ Diving Bell, for solo triangle, uses this same idea of re-sculpting an instrument’s timbral possibilities, but in this case with live processing, to produce a beautiful meditation on a single sound. 

Also featured on the program is music by Mario Diaz de Leon.  Mansion, for two alto flutes, percussion and electronics, and Gated Eclipse, for amplified sextet and electronics, are both mesmerizing examples of this talented young composer’s hypnotic and ritualistic style that focuses on acoustic/electronic hybrids.  Finally, Daniel Wohl’s AORTA, for solo piano and tape, explores an electronic sound world produced exclusively through distorted piano sounds.

An artist of many facets, American pianist Tim Whitehead is a graduate of The Eastman School of Music and has been both a long and short term resident artist at The Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada. He has performed throughout the United States, Canada, and Western Europe, and has been heard on National Public Radio, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s ZedTV, and Radio Suisse Romande. Mr. Whitehead is a laureate of the Academie de Musique de Lausanne, has been presented in recital at The Holland Music Sessions, and has held staff piano positions at Bennington College and The Quartet Program at Bucknell University. {Poem88} opened in October 2010 in the White Provision District of Atlanta's Westside. Under the curatorial direction of writer and filmmaker Robin Bernat, {Poem88} represents emerging and mid-career artists, and presents thoughtful and innovative explorations in a new artistic frontier.

The opening of the Architecture Building, designed by the firm of Harold Bush-Brown, J. Herbert “Doc” Gailey and P. M. Heffernan, the first modern architectural school building in the nation, and the formal initiation of programs of study in Industrial Design and City Planning.

The building opened on September 20, 1952 and in his opening address the then director Harold Bush-Brown said:

And if the School of Architecture at Tech is able to give its future graduates the kind of preparation, which will enable them to help create a better environment for our people, no expenditure of money will have been mis-spent. We need and we can have better homes and better places in which to work, better products of industry, and above all better cities and towns and rural communities.

The 60^th Anniversary Celebrations will begin by reproducing exactly an exhibition from 1955 A Half Century of Architectural Education which illustrated the work of graduates in architecture from the first the fifty years. All the panels have survived and present a grand view of the ambitions for architecture in the 50’s: and there are familiar names.

And at the same time we will unveil the restoration of the original Architecture Library where much of the woodwork has remained hidden, but untouched for thirty years.  I see this as the initial phase in what I hope will be a plan to completely restore the East Architecture Building.

The celebration will continue with a request that will go to all our alumni in Industrial Design, City & Regional Planning and Architecture from 1952 till the present. It will ask you to submit a favorite example of your work, which will form the basis for three exhibitions to be held during the spring semester. All work submitted will be placed in a digital archive - available for all to see - and become an ongoing repository for the creative work of the College.

A most important consequence of all this is to recover the values and ideals that have made this College strong and influential over so many years.

Taysheng Jeng (PhD Arch '99) is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Architecture at National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan

ABSTRACT:

Digital technologies continue to proliferate, enabling ever smarter devices, materials and space to change the way we interact with our built environment. While smarter materials, devices, and space can be pervasively embedded in our built environment, it is likely to change the way we live and how buildings perform.

This lecture provides an overview of smart space and interactive architecture relating to the design and implementation of technology-empowered living labs at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) in Taiwan. The NCKU architecture living labs create new spaces to ignite creativity and interactivity, including Green Classroom, Interactive Studio, Robotic Architecture, Smart Home, and Augmented Garden. Examples of some research projects are presented to demonstrate sustainable, sensing, and responsive capabilities of smart space and interactive architecture.

A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY:

Taysheng Jeng received the M.A. degree in Architecture from University of California at Los Angles, in 1993, and the Ph.D. degree in Architecture from Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia in 1999. Since 2011, he has been the Chair and a Professor of the Department of Architecture at the National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan. His research interests include interactive architecture, smart space, and computer-aided design.

Metropolis, a milestone of German expressionism and an inspiration for science fiction films such as Blade Runner and The Matrix, portrays a dystopian world in which the poor tend to futuristic machines and inevitably clash with the wealthy elite. Recently found footage in Argentina has restored Metropolis to its original length. Sonic Generator's performance — featuring sixteen instrumentalists and electronic sounds — will present the American premiere of Martin Matalon's score for this newly restored edition. Performed on the piazza at the Woodruff Arts Center, with the film screened dramatically onto the High Museum of Art, Metropolis will showcase an iconic film and cutting-edge music in a unique space.

Please join us this Thursday to hear Dr. Subhro Guhathakurta speak on “Confronting An Uncertain Future: Planning in the Era of Climate Change and Other Global Crises.”

Director of the Center for Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Professor of Planning, Dr. Guhathakurta writes: We are living in an age of uncertainty that is unique at several levels. The current economic downturn precipitated by the U.S. subprime mortgage debacle, the potential for catastrophic climate change, the two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and more generally the war on terror, profoundly affects our ability to plan for a secure future. These unfolding events point to an immensely complex world with multiple layers of uncertain drivers and unknown "tipping points" and “Black Swans”. Now, more than ever, the most significant issues impacting cities and regions are forces outside their borders. This presentation is about confronting these challenges and finding a pathway to articulate the uncertainties through a different form of planning. Along the way I will discuss the evolving concept of sustainability and an approach to planning with hierarchical scenarios. I will also illustrate our efforts to develop some novel modeling and visualization tools to monitor and communicate sustainability indicators.

About Subhro Guhathakurta:

Subhro Guhathakurta joined GeorgiaTech in 2011 as the Director of the Center for Geographic Information Systems and Professor in the School of City and Regional Planning. He was previously Associate Director of the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning at Arizona State University (ASU) and among the founding faculty members of ASU’s School of Sustainability. Professor Guhathakurta was instrumental in developing the Urban Modeling and Simulation Lab in ASU’s College of Design. He also serves as the lead member of several research centers at ASU including the GeoDa Center for Geospatial Analysis and Computation, Decision Center for a Desert City, and the project on Sustainable Urban Systems, Technologies, and Infrastructure (SUSTaIn). He is an author of 5 books and monographs and over 70 scientific papers. His article on the interface between urban modeling and planning theory was awarded the Chester Rapkin Award for the best paper (1999) in Journal of Planning Education and Research. His editorial contributions include books such as "Integrated Urban and Environmental Models: A Survey of Current Applications and Research" (Springer-Verlag, 2003) and "Visualizing Sustainable Planning" (Springer 2009). He has held visiting appointments at the Center for Urban Spatial Analysis at University College London, the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore, and at the Center for Sustainable Urban and Regional Futures at the University of Queensland in Brisbane. More recently, he held the German National Science Foundation (DFG) Mercator Guestprofessorship at Technische Universität Kaiserslautern, Germany.

Laura Hollengreen, an Associate Professor in the School of Architecture, will speak on 'Defining Artifact and Context in Gothic Architecture:  Why It's Not So Obvious'

This talk will discuss the “edges” of the Gothic cathedral.  Cathedral buildings are big and their walls meet the ground solidly, so how and why are the boundaries of the artifact in fact less definite than they appear?  Meanwhile, the setting for such buildings appears to be consistently urban but "context" can be variously construed even within the restricted realms of urban form and spatial practice.  The signal example of the Cathedral of Notre Dame at Chartres will provide material for a thumbnail case study of these challenges to interpretation.

Bringing Music Technology Innovation to Ensemble Performance

In Echobo, audience collaborate with musicians, playing a musical instrument available in iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch). Please bring any iOS device that you have and participate in the performance!

Heat of the Day
Mason Bretan, Yingjia Liu, Nathan Weitzner

Heat of the Day is a piece by jazz guitarist Pat Metheny. In this arrangement a combination of melodic and rhythmic percussion instruments are played by humans and mechanical devices respectively. Our setup alludes to Metheny's own mechanical ensemble, Orchestrion, which uses solenoids to musically layer several percussive sounds. Though much of the piece is precomposed there are sections in which the software takes advantage of listening techniques and stochastic processes for improvisatory purposes.

SMASH (Sonic Mosaicing mASHups)
Scott McCoid, Gregoire Tronel, Luke Heerman, Weibin Shen, Brad Short, Neeraj Vaidya

SMASH is a piece that takes everyday surfaces such as chairs, tables, and flower pots are repurposed as electroacoustic percussive surfaces. Six hand-drumming percussionists will generate an array of electronically synthesized sounds by employing a realtime computer analysis of the surface vibrations. The end result is an exciting exploration of the connection between acoustic physical surfaces and electronic synthesis.

N400

In N400, a concerto for orchestra composed by Gil Weinberg, we offer a unique collaboration between the Georgia Tech Symphony Orchestra and Shimon, our marimba-playing robot. Shimon will listen to, improvise, and play along with the orchestra, while responding to gestures directed at him by the conductor. This is Shimon's debut performance with a symphony orchestra.

Music Slave
Jason Clark, Anosh Daruwalla, Sang Won Lee, Sidharth Subramanian

Music Slave is an interactive and networked music piece performed by a distributed choir group and an instrument ensemble. The instrumentalists do not make any noise, but rather distribute musical notes to each member of the choir via a mobile network so the choir can sing the notes heard. As opposed to the notion of a traditional choir, who stand together on stage facing the audience, Music Slave lets each choir member sing anywhere in an open performance space and wander among the audience.

GrOOveID
Ruofeng Chen, Frederick Leighton, Jimmy O’ Neill, Ajay Srinivasamurthy

GrOOveID is a real-time groove recognizer, predictor and a visualizer for percussion ensembles. Through a MIDI interface, it listens to the grooves played by the ensemble and recognizes them. This information drives dynamic visualizations for the grooves being played. As the performance progresses, GrOOveID also analyzes and understands the drummers to predict the grooves that would probably be played next.

Known for her musical creativity and electrifying stage presence, Simmons is committed to expanding the boundaries of classical music. As this year’s ARTech resident artist in Georgia Tech's Ferst Center for the Arts, she has explored rhythm as vital to efficiency, productivity, and communication. 

Simmons' residency culminates on February 18, 2012, with a presentation of a piece of musical art created during the residency with the collaboration of ARTech participants. Using Urban Remix, a platform for mobile phone sound capture and remixing created in the Georgia Tech Center for Music Technology, students gathered sound bites and photos of rhythmic machinery and technology, powerful speakers, rhythmic human interaction and examples of music known mostly for its rhythmic drive.  Jade has explored the captured sounds with the goal of creating the same powerful rhythmic impact through means other than their original sources to be included in a new original piece that will premiere at the Ferst Center. Along with her trio Collide, Jade will also perform with Shimon, Georgia Tech's improvising robotic musician. 

About the Artist: Recently named Best Arts Ambassador by the Houston Press, Jade Simmons comes to the Ferst Center fresh off of her holiday performance at the White House in December 2011. The past year found Jade serving as webcast host for the prestigious Tchaikovsky competition in St. Petersburg and Moscow, authoring her first book, "Emerge Already! The Ultimate Guide to Career-Building for Emerging Artists," and making her debut with the Illinois Symphony and the Ritz Chamber Ensemble. Jade was also a special guest performer at the Georgia Tech Black Alumni Organization's "Legends and Leaders" event celebrating the 50th anniversary of the matriculation of Georgia Tech's first African-American students. In 2012 Jade will perform a tour of Historically Black Colleges and Universities under the auspices of the White House 2012 and release her highly-anticipated second genre-bending Cd on the eOne Music label. For more on Jade, visit www.jademedia.org. 

Georgia Tech’s contemporary chambermusic ensemble-in-residence, SonicGenerator, features music by AlvinLucier, Jason Freeman, Steve Everett, Tae Hong Park, AdamSilverman, and Pedro Rivadeneirain a free performance in partnershipwith the Woodruff Arts Center. Showcasinginnovative music by Atlanta-based composers who integrate technology intocontemporary music, the concert also includes the premiere of SGLCby Jason Freeman, a professor atGeorgia Tech’s School of Music.

In the performance, four laptop musicians type inshort fragments of computer code to create, share and borrow musical motivesthat are in turn displayed on digital screens for four acoustic musicians tosight-read in performance. This unusual combination of live computer coding,real-time music notation and “extreme” sight-reading encourages a novel,improvisatory collaboration as the ensemble develops musical ideas togetherlive.

Two works on the program use the Beatles’ Strawberry Fields Forever as a startingpoint. Atlanta native Adam Silverman’sStrawberry Fields Continuedintegrates recordings of the original’s lyrics with both live instruments and amultitracked orchestra of cellos to offer a new perspective on the classictune, while experimental music pioneer AlvinLucier’s Nothing is Real usesthe unusual acoustics of a teapot to transform the song’s melody.

The concert also includes works that explore thepossibilities of spatialized sound. Sonic Generator presents Tae Hong Park, who recently moved toAtlanta from New Orleans to join the music technology faculty at Georgia StateUniversity, with his work for violin, drum kit and seven-channel surround sound.In addition, the group performs the world premiere of Argentinian composer Pedro Rivadeneira’s work for flute,clarinet, keyboards and live quadraphonic electronics. Rounding out the programis music for flute and live electronics by SteveEverett, a long-time Atlantan, professor at Emory and collaborator of theensemble.

An immersive and interactive 3D music- and art-making drawing desk, the work culminates an Artist-In-Residence Program launched by the Georgia Tech Center for Music Technology, in collaboration with the Schools of Music, Architecture, and Industrial Design.

The Open Ended Group is made up of artist and artificial intelligence researcher Marc Downie, digital artist Shelley Eshkar, and digital artist and writer Paul Kaiser. Their works for stage, screen, gallery, print, and public space have been exhibited around the world, most recently at the Lincoln Center in New York, ZKM in Karlsruhe Germany, The Museum of Moving Images in New York and the International Chekhov Festival in Moscow.

Georgia Tech’s contemporary chamber music ensemble-in-residence, Sonic Generator, features music by Daniel Wohl, Tristan Perich, Ronan Shai, Michel van der Aa and Thierry de Mey in a free performance in partnership with the Woodruff Arts Center. The concert showcases innovative contemporary music that uses a variety of technologies to create a “lo-fi” sound.

Georgia Tech’s contemporary chamber music ensemble-in-residence, Sonic Generator, features music by Jonathan Berger, Steve Reich, Charles Dodge, Visda Goudarzi, and Katharina Vogt in a free performance in partnership with the International Conference on Auditory Display. The concert showcases innovative contemporary music that transforms various types of data into musical form. 

The concert features guest composer Jonathan Berger, a professor at Stanford and a leading researcher on the intersections between data sonification and creative practice. His string quartet Doubles (2004), originally written for the St. Lawrence String Quartet, recalls songs of peace, freedom, and resistance and also draws inspiration from seventeenth-century ornamentation practices. Viola Elegy (1987), by computer music pioneer Charles Dodge, draws its musical content from fractal structures. Minimalist composer Steve Reich’s Piano Phase (1967), performed in this concert in a version for two marimbas, turns the concept of phasing — in which two musicians initially play in unison but drift further and further apart over time — into a gradual process that drives the entire piece. And Chirping Stars (2012) by Visda Goudarzi and Katharina Vogt, a finalist in the conference’s annual sonification competition, turns an analysis of the most popular musicians on Twitter into an electroacoustic reflection on social listening.

Sonic Generator, Georgia Tech’s contemporary chamber music ensemble-in-residence, explores the ways in which technology can transform how we create, perform and listen to music. The ensemble, comprised of some of the top classical musicians in Atlanta, works closely with Georgia Tech students and faculty in the School of Music and elsewhere on campus to present concerts that bring cutting-edge technologies to the world of contemporary classical music. Sonic Generator is sponsored by the GVU Center, the Center for Music Technology, the School of Music, and the College of Architecture. Sonic Generator’s season is also supported by the Aaron Copland Fund for Music.

The International Conference on Auditory Display is a forum for presenting research on the use of sound to display data, monitor systems, and provide enhanced user interfaces for computers and virtual reality systems. It is unique in its singular focus on auditory displays and the array of perception, technology, and application areas that this encompasses. This year’s meeting, hosted by Georgia Tech, marks the 20^th anniversary of the conference.

Chamber ensembles provide an opportunity for exceptional musicians at Georgia Tech to refine their musical skills and earn additional course credit. Various chamber ensembles include saxophone quartet, clarinet quartet, flute choir, woodwind and brass quintets, and tuba ensemble.

“We want the competition to be the place to see, experience and engage the future of music,” said Gil Weinberg, Director of the Georgia Tech Center for Music Technology. “It’s also a platform for bringing like-minded inventors and composers together from all over the world to have their ideas judged by a preeminent panel of independent experts.”

Instruments will be judged on musicality, design and engineering by an expert panel including Atau Tanaka, media artist and researcher, and Cyril Lance, chief engineer at electronic musical instrument manufacturer Moog Music.

On his approach to judging the competition, Tanaka explained, “There is a disruptive power in questioning traditional musical  roles of authorship and performance. Through this questioning, the basic tenets of musical instrumentality come to light.”

In total, $10,000 in cash prizes will be awarded to the most exciting novel musical instruments and presented by Tech alumnus Richard Guthman in honor of his musician wife,Margaret.

Twenty-four inventors, composers and designers from nine countries were selected to compete, from more than 50 entries.  For a taste of the kinds of instruments that will be presented in the competition, here are four examples from this year’s entrant pool:

• Resistor JelTone, a partially edible toy piano by Brooklyn-based hacker collective, NYC Resistor;
• Audio Cube, a set of smart light-emitting blocks for music creation designed by Bert Schiettecatte of Belgium (with competition performance by Colorado-based electronic musician Mark Mosher).
  
• Hyperkeys, a keyboard, with keys that move in-and-out as well as up-and-down, by Jeff Tripp; and
• Audio Skin, incorporatingon-body textiles in a sculptural and performative musical instrument, by Vienna, Austria-based Martin Rille.

Past competitions have hosted a broad range of inventions, including last year’s winner, MO, by Interlude Consortium, the software that explores novel gestural interfaces for musical expression with everyday objects; and second prize winner MindBox Media Slot Machine, by German group Humatic Berlin, a vintage slot machine with an unexpected modern twist on the age-old tradition of canon composition.

Parking for the Klaus Advanced Computing Building is available in the State Street Visitor’s Lot at the intersection of Ferst Drive and State Street on campus. The cost is $1.50 per hour, payable by cash or card in advance.
