Exhibition Dates: April 28, 2011 through May 27, 2011

The Robert C. Williams Paper Museum is pleased to present an exhibition focusing on the explorations of papermaker Dard Hunter. The exhibit will showcase stories and artifacts gathered by Hunter as he traveled the world documenting traditional papermaking techniques. Papermaking by hand had all but vanished in the United States with the arrival of the Industrial Age. Between the two World Wars, Hunter an artist, printer, and papermaker of the Arts and Crafts Movement observed ancient papermaking techniques in Europe, Thailand, Japan, China, India, and the South Pacific. On his trips he collected paper and papermaking tools, and when he returned he wrote about his experiences in individually crafted books. This exhibit brings to life a new perspective on Dard Hunter, a man who once said, “I have the feeling that more can be learned about a strange country and its people by associating with the natives themselves.”

This exhibition was researched, planned, and designed by Georgia Tech students as part of a unique and interactive class in Museum Studies. The class consists of 16 undergraduate students from a variety of majors including Engineering, Architecture, HTS, and International Affairs.
