{"71163":{"#nid":"71163","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Enterprise to Empower Socializes Student Innovation","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EWhat began as a student-organized, citywide\nconference last fall has since become one of Tech\u2019s newest student\norganizations, and the group hopes to inspire fellow Tech students to use their\nskills and talents to solve social problems.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EEnterprise to Empower (En2Em) seeks to educate,\nenable and engage students in social entrepreneurship, no matter what corner of\ncampus they find themselves immersed in study.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThere\u2019s a need not only for students to think\nmore innovatively and entrepreneurially, but also to think more about the\nsocial impact they can make,\u201d said Melissa McCoy, founder and president of\nEn2Em and a student in chemical and biomolecular engineering. After working\nabroad during the spring of 2010 in Chile for SQM, a metallic mining company,\nMcCoy found herself inspired to educate and engage fellow students in social\nentrepreneurship. En2Em offers education, career development and venture\nincubation services focused on social innovation.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cStudents don\u2019t think entrepreneurially or socially\nbecause they don\u2019t see exit strategies from college in these realms,\u201d McCoy\nsaid. She hopes to bring a wider understanding of social entrepreneurship to\nall of Tech; last year, En2Em hosted the Institute\u2019s first Social Enterprise\nCareer Fair, bringing organizations to campus such as Teach for America, The\nCarter Center and the Georgia Center for Nonprofits.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cWhile our organization has a social focus, we want to\nhelp all entrepreneurially minded students and perhaps introduce them to the\nidea of applying their creations to developing markets or in a socially-oriented\nway.\u201d En2Em works with organizers from the InVenture Prize, Business Plan\nCompetition and Ideas 2 SERVE to provide support to students already interested\nin these events. \u201cWe want to push students to think longer term with their\nventures \u2014 rather than it being a nice project to put on their resume, we want\nthem to think they can change the world with this.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EEn2Em will support the University System of Georgia\u2019s\nSocial Business and Microcredit Forum being held at the Ferst Center on Oct.\n17. Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammed Yunus, considered to be the father of\nmicrocredit, will deliver a keynote address, and En2Em will assist in judging a\nstudent social business plan competition. Applications for the competition will\nbe accepted through Friday, Oct. 14, with more details \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.usg.edu\/social_business_microcredit\/competition\/\u0022\u003Eavailable\nonline\u003C\/a\u003E; winners will have the chance to dine with Yunus and competition\njudges.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThroughout the year, En2Em will host monthly Coffee and\nConversation events, organize dinners with social entrepreneurs and lead case\nstudy projects.
