The $7.2 million contract\nwill fund the center for the next five years.\u003Cem\u003E \u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThe\nRCOE has operated under different names since its creation in 1982. Presently known\nas the Vertical Lift Research Center of Excellence (VLRCOE), the current\n\u201ccenter of excellence\u201d designation was made by a panel of government and\nindustry experts who comprise the government\u2019s National Rotorcraft Technology\nCenter. The VLRCOE carries out multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research\nand education, focusing on advancing vertical lift technology, and works in close collaboration with the U.S. rotorcraft\nindustry. \u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EDuring the past decade, the RCOE has produced 82 PhD graduates. Students\nin the RCOE have a track record of excellence, winning first or second place in\nevery graduate and undergraduate rotorcraft design competition sponsored by the\nAmerican Helicopter Society International and the rotorcraft industry for the\npast 27 years.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThe\nimpact and contributions of the center to our School of Aerospace Engineering\nand to Georgia Tech in general extends\nfar beyond the more than $35 million in direct government funding provided over\nthe past three decades,\u201d said Daniel P. Schrage, rotorcraft design professor\nwho has been the director of Georgia Tech RCOEs since 1986. \u201cThe center has\nserved as a catalyst for expanding a number of our academic and research focus\nareas and has served as a positive force in the Georgia Tech\u2019s distinction as one\nof the world\u2019s leading aerospace engineering universities.\u201d \u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThe\nRCOE was Georgia Tech\u2019s first externally designated center of excellence in\n1982.
