Third Edition of The Tower Hits Racks on Campus

Tech’s undergraduate research journal brings a new edition of its print publication to campus this week, highlighting the research culture prevalent even among students early in their studies at the Institute.

In addition to articles, the third edition includes interviews and fellowship spotlights, as well as a feature in memoriam for alumnus Liam Rattray who passed away in May.

Since its inception nearly four years ago, The Tower has evolved from printing an edition once a year to a robust resource for undergraduate research at the Institute. The journal’s staff not only produces a print edition, but also maintains a blog, hosts events and conducts interviews with undergraduates and faculty around campus.

“Our initial goal was to publish every semester. We were only able to publish once last year, but this year we’re publishing in the spring as well,” said Michael Chen, a fourth-year chemistry major and Tower editor-in-chief. “We also hope to be a bigger presence on campus. We’re doing some of that with the Undergraduate Research Kaleidoscope, which we hope to make a casual research presentation for all to come to.”

The Undergraduate Research Kaleidoscope (URK) takes place once a semester in a format with presenters giving quick overviews of their research in a casual setting, usually with something edible to complement the presentations. More than 50 people attended the last event in the spring, and the fall URK is planned for the Wednesday, Dec. 7, during the week preceding final exams.

Chen will step down from his post as editor-in-chief in May, but finds gratifying the progress made during his tenure with the publication and the interest generated among students.

“Being able to solicit submissions and actually get them, that makes me really proud — that people see The Tower as a place to submit their work,” he said.

Submissions to The Tower are accepted on a rolling basis and can be in the form of articles, dispatches, perspectives or synopses. The journal also continually accepts applications to be involved on its staff. More information on both can be found at gttower.org.

Pick up your copy of The Tower at various locations around campus.
