The Policy Forum program will be held at the Georgia Tech Research Institute Conference Center located at 250 14th Street NW, Atlanta, GA 30318, and will begin at 8:00 a.m. and conclude at 1:00 p.m. The School and Senator Nunn are proud to host, Gen. John R. Allen, USMC (ret), Co-Director, Center for the 21st Century Security and Intelligence at the Brookings Institute and former Special Presidential Envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter ISIL as the keynote speaker for this year’s Forum. The Sam Nunn School Policy Forum brings together noted academic, government, and private-sector experts on technology, public policy and international affairs to address issues of global importance in a biennial public event. The audience at the Forum numbers roughly 200 individuals from the policy, academic and business communities as well as members of the media. This year’s Forum topic is: How Does it End and What Can We Do? Addressing the Underlying Causes of Ideological Extremism. This Forum will examine two major issues: What are some of the underlying causes of this radicalism? What, if anything, can the United States and our friends and allies around the world do about it? For the last two decades, United States security policy has been dominated by a series of crises within and emanating from the Middle East. Nearly any conflict within this region affects at least four specific U.S. national security interests in one way or another, including: prevention of terrorist attacks on the homeland, protection of American citizens abroad, security for allies and partners, and protection of universal values. The rise of ISIL has impacted every one of these security interests to some degree, and has thus elevated it within the “urgent” space of the “urgent versus important” terrain in policy circles. Moreover, ISIL’s activities have catalyzed nearly every source of conflict juxtaposed within the Middle East, including inter- and intra-sectarian strife, tension between rulers and ruled, violent conflict between multiple state and non-state adversaries, and clashes between tribes, ethnicities, and nations. A Forum program listing all the participants and a registration form, should you decide to attend, will be updated and available for you at our website (http://nunnforum.inta.gatech.edu/) in the coming weeks. Please direct inquiries to: snforum16@inta.gatech.edu. We hope that you will be able to join us for this important discussion.
Please share this invitation with your students and colleagues.

<status>1</status> <created>1471014828</created> <gmt_created>2016-08-12 15:13:48</gmt_created> <changed>1492118109</changed> <gmt_changed>2017-04-13 21:15:09</gmt_changed> <promote>0</promote> <sticky>0</sticky> <teaser>This Forum will examine two major issues: What are some of the underlying causes of this radicalism? Dr. Denise Herzing has been studying Atlantic spotted dolphins, Stenella frontalis, in the Bahamas for over three decades. Her video and acoustic database encompasses a myriad of complex vocalizations and dolphin behavior. Dr. Thad Starner works on mining this dataset and decoding dolphin sounds, and has created a wearable underwater computer, CHAT (Cetacean Hearing and Telemetry), to help establish a bridge for communication between humans and dolphins. Starner and Herzing will present this cutting-edge work and recent results, including perspectives on the challenges of studying this aquatic society, and decoding their communication signals using the latest technology.

RSVP for this event

Scheller College of Business directions and parking

Bios:

Denise Herzing received her B.S. in Marine Zoology from Oregon State University in 1979; her M.A. in Behavioral Biology from San Francisco State University in 1988; and her Ph.D. in Behavioral Biology and Environmental Studies from the Union Institute Graduate School in 1993. When looking through the evidence after the fact, a trail often exists that, had it been noticed, could have possibly provided enough time to intervene and prevent an incident.

With support from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the Army Research Office, researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology are collaborating with scientists from four other organizations to develop new approaches for identifying these "insider threats" before an incident occurs. The two-year, $9 million project will create a suite of algorithms that can detect multiple types of insider threats by analyzing massive amounts of data -- including email, text messages and file transfers -- for unusual activity.

The project is being led by Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) and also includes researchers from Oregon State University, the University of Massachusetts and Carnegie Mellon University.

"Analysts looking at the electronically recorded activities of employees within government or defense contracting organizations for anomalous behaviors may now have the bandwidth to investigate five anomalies per day out of thousands of possibilities. Our goal is to develop a system that will provide analysts for the first time a very short, ranked list of unexplained events that should be further investigated," said project co-principal investigator David A. Bader, a professor with a joint appointment in the Georgia Tech School of Computational Science and Engineering and the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI).

Under the contract, the researchers will leverage a combination of massively scalable graph-processing algorithms, advanced statistical anomaly detection methods and knowledge-based relational machine learning algorithms to create a prototype Anomaly Detection at Multiple Scales (ADAMS) system. The system could revolutionize the capabilities of counter-intelligence community operators to identify and prioritize potential malicious insider threats against a background of everyday cyber network activity.

The research team will have access to massive data sets collected from operational environments where individuals have explicitly agreed to be monitored. The information will include electronically recorded activities, such as computer logins, emails, instant messages and file transfers. The ADAMS system will be capable of pulling these terabytes of data together and using novel algorithms to quickly analyze the information to discover anomalies.

"We need to bring together high-performance computing, algorithms and systems on an unprecedented scale because we're collecting a massive amount of information in real time for a long period of time," explained Bader. "We are further challenged because we are capturing the information at different rates -- keystroke information is collected at very rapid rates and other information, such as file transfers, is collected at slower rates."

In addition to Bader, other Georgia Tech researchers supporting key components of this program include School of Interactive Computing professor Irfan Essa, School of Computational Science and Engineering associate professor Edmond Chow, GTRI principal research engineers Lora Weiss and Fred Wright, GTRI senior research scientist Richard Boyd, and GTRI research scientists Joshua L. Davis and Erica Briscoe.

"We look forward to working with DARPA and our academic partners to develop a prototype ADAMS system that can detect anomalies in massive data sets that can translate to significant, often critical, actionable insider threat information across a wide variety of application domains," said John Fratamico, SAIC senior vice president and business unit general manager.

Research News & Publications Office
Georgia Institute of Technology
75 Fifth Street, N.W., Suite 314
Atlanta, Georgia 30308 USA

Media Relations Contacts: Abby Robinson (abby@innovate.gatech.edu; 404-385-3364) or John Toon (jtoon@gatech.edu; 404-894-6986)

Writer: Abby Robinson

 <status>1</status> <created>1320886800</created> <gmt_created>2011-11-10 01:00:00</gmt_created> <changed>1475896238</changed> <gmt_changed>2016-10-08 03:10:38</gmt_changed> <promote>0</promote> <sticky>0</sticky> <teaser>Researchers will analyze massive amounts of data for unusual activity.</teaser> <type>news</type> <sentence>Researchers will analyze massive amounts of data for unusual activity.</sentence>

Researchers at Georgia Tech are developing new approaches for identifying "insider threats" before an incident occurs. This course is taught both online and within a hybrid setting.

During the past three years Georgia College has experimented with using Second Life (SL) as a creative outlet to augment the learning process. In recent semesters GC faculty have used the virtual world to create and model various situations that are closely related to real life situations. Within SL students are able to create their own learning experiences and gain valuable insight from the successes and failures that occur as they progress through the semester. These experiences are based on course objectives and are tried and tested in-world. Students are able to see their plans come to virtual life and they are able to make adjustments, if needed. Later, the students report their findings. In most cases students are able to learn by doing and may take their virtual world experiences forward into the real world.

During the Talk, Smith will discuss and demonstrate how they created a business model in SL, how the students interacted with the software, and their evaluations of the learning model. He will also be able to answer your questions and explain future plans for the software in classroom settings.

<status>1</status> <created>1328178351</created> <gmt_created>2012-02-02 10:25:51</gmt_created> The second annual Tech4Good Poster Showcase and the twice-yearly Capstone Design Expo both help students gain real world experience and promote creativity in designing their own products for market.

Tech4Good lets students from different areas of study work on projects that benefit nonprofit organizations and local communities. It aims to build on current service learning activities on campus and promote social entrepreneurship and civic engagement in Tech's curriculum.

The Capstone Design Expo focuses on mechanical, biomedical, electrical and computer, and industrial and systems engineering projects, as well as industrial design projects. Students in these majors take the Capstone Senior Design course and develop innovative ideas that solve an industry-sponsored challenge, help researchers develop technology, or form the basis for their own startup. Both events allow students to meet professionals from their field of study who provide helpful criticism and potential job and investment offers.

From helping nonprofit companies to competing for cash prizes and job offers, each expo shows Tech’s student talent. Tech4Good will take place Wednesday, Dec. 3, from 4 – 6 p.m. on the first floor of Clough Commons. The Capstone Design Expo will be held Thursday, Dec. 4, from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. at McCamish Pavilion. Both events are free and open to the public.

 <status>1</status> <created>1417519948</created> <gmt_created>2014-12-02 11:32:28</gmt_created> Learning and Control for Contact-rich Manipulation
 <uid>27863</uid>

Abstract: For all the promise of big-data machine learning, what will happen when robots deploy to our homes and workplaces and inevitably encounter new objects, new tasks, and new environments? If a solution to every problem cannot be pre-trained, then robots will need to adapt to this novelty. Can a robot, instead, spend a few seconds to a few minutes gathering information and then accomplish a complex task? Why does it seem that so much data is required, anyway? I will first argue that the hybrid or contact-driven aspects of manipulation clashes with the inductive biases inherent in standard learning methods, driving this current need for large data. I will then show how contact-inspired implicit learning, embedding convex optimization, can reshape the loss landscape and enable more accurate training, better generalization, and ultimately data efficiency. Finally, I will present our latest results on how these learned models can be deployed via real-time multi-contact MPC for robotic manipulation.

Bio: Michael Posa is an Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics at the University of Pennsylvania. Some of these harms occur at the individual and interpersonal level: for example, abusers in intimate partner violence (IPV) use smartphones and social media to surveil and stalk their victims. Others are more subtle, at the level of social structure: for example, in organizations, workplace technologies can inadvertently scaffold exploitative labor practices. This talk will discuss my research (1) investigating these harms via online measurement studies, (2) building interventions to directly assist survivors with their security and privacy; and (3) instrumenting these interventions, to enable scientific research into new types of harms as attackers and technologies evolve. I will close by sharing my vision for centering inclusion and equity in digital safety, security and privacy, towards brighter technological futures for us all.

Bio: Emily Tseng is a PhD candidate in Information Science at Cornell University.
