This national monument to John Marshall was completed in 1884 when a statue of John Marshall was formally erected outside of the West Front of the United States Capitol Grounds. Marshall’s Monument remained in existence until 1981 when Marshall’s statue was relocated to the basement of the U.S. Supreme Court building to make way for President Reagan’s inauguration ceremonies.

  This paper argues that Congress should restore the national monument to John Marshall by rededicating the existing John Marshall Park, a derelict park located between the Canadian Embassy and the United State Court of Appeals for the Washington D.C. Circuit that contains a replica of the original John Marshall statue, as the John Marshall Memorial Park.

Explore the conceptual plan from 2007 and the conceptual plan from 2009.

About Ryan Rowberry
Ryan Rowberry is an Assistant Professor at the Georgia State University College of Law. As a member of the Center for the Comparative Study of Metropolitan Growth, he teaches Property Law, Environmental Law, and Legal History. Professor Rowberry's research concentrates on the historical development of property and natural resources law. He also examines legal issues facing Coptic Christians in Egypt. His most recent article, A Brief History of Coptic Personal Status Law, was published by the Berkeley Journal of Middle Eastern and Islamic Law in 2010.

Professor Rowberry graduated from Harvard Law School, where he was an Islamic Legal Studies Fellow, a Cravath International Fellow, and received the Irving Oberman Award in Legal History. Following graduation, he practiced environmental and natural resources law at Hogan Lovells in Washington, DC. Immediately prior to joining the College of Law, Professor Rowberry was a Supreme Court Fellow, during which he collaborated with foreign judges and academics on judicial independence and rule-of-law matters.

Before attending law school, Professor Rowberry worked as a historian and an educator. He transcribed and collated all extant medieval manuscripts for three of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. He also taught 7th grade at a charter school and lectured in English and History at Peking University in Beijing, China. He holds a B.A. in English from Brigham Young University and was selected as a Rhodes Scholar. At Oxford University he earned a M.Sc. in Comparative Education Policy and a M.St. in Medieval British History.

  <status>1</status>  <created>1321275476</created>  <gmt_created>2011-11-14 12:57:56</gmt_created>  <changed>1475891797</changed>  <gmt_changed>2016-10-08 01:56:37</gmt_changed>  <promote>0</promote>  <sticky>0</sticky>  <teaser></teaser>  <type>event</type>  <sentence></sentence>

Supporting the rededication to the existing John Marshall Park.

  <start>2011-11-29T11:00:00-05:00</start>  <end>2011-11-29T12:00:00-05:00</end>  <end_last>2011-11-29T12:00:00-05:00</end_last>  <gmt_start>2011-11-29 16:00:00</gmt_start>  <gmt_end>2011-11-29 17:00:00</gmt_end>  <gmt_end_last>2011-11-29 17:00:00</gmt_end_last>  <times>
      <value>2011-11-29T11:00:00-05:00</value>      <value2>2011-11-29T12:00:00-05:00</value2>      <rrule>  </rrule>      <timezone>America/New_York</timezone>      <timezone_db>America/New_York</timezone_db>      <date_type>datetime</date_type>
  </times>  <gmt_times>
      <value>2011-11-29 11:00:00</value>      <value2>2011-11-29 12:00:00</value2>      <rrule>  </rrule>      <timezone>America/New_York</timezone>      <timezone_db>America/New_York</timezone_db>      <date_type>datetime</date_type>
  </gmt_times>  <phone></phone>
http://bit.ly/pZukYn
  <location_url>
http://bit.ly/pZukYn

  </location_url>

  <contact>
Elora Raymond
678.788.0949
</contact>  <fee></fee>  <extras>      </extras>  <location></location>  <media>
72885
      </media>  <hg_media>
          <nid>72885</nid>          <type>image</type>
John Marshall Park - Come join the Social Justice Committee of the School of City and Regional Planning on Monday, March, 26 from 6:00-8:00pm in the Reinsch Peirce Family Auditorium at an event that explores the impact that coal has on communities in Georgia and beyond.

Our presenters represent two regions that have been affected by coal power production. Donna Branham is a community organizer in Mingo County, West Virginia. Her husband and her father were coal miners. After seeing the environmental and economic effects of strip-mining in her community, she decided to take action.

Seth Gunning and Jennette Gayer are environmental advocates from the Sierra Club Beyond Coal Campaign and Environment Georgia, respectively. Both are well-respected in their field. Seth is a Georgia resident who has been an active participant in the conversation around energy policy in the state. He is a graduate of Valdosta State University. Jennette coordinates policy development, research, and legislative advocacy and organizes around a number of issues to bring cleaner air, water, and open spaces in Georgia. She is a graduate of the College of William and Mary. The two will discuss how coal burning power plants have evolved into a main power source in Georgia, and how the economy and the environment have been impacted.

The third speaker is Dr. Marilyn Brown of the Georgia Tech School of Public Policy. During her prior career at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, she held various leadership positions managing annual research budgets of $50 to $130 million, focused on energy efficiency, renewable energy, electric grid, and energy engineering projects. While at ORNL, she was also an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Tennessee. Her research focuses on the design and impact of policies aimed at accelerating the development and deployment of sustainable energy technologies. Dr. Brown will discuss how the future of energy is changing and the benefits of moving beyond coal.

After the event, we will have a reception with refreshments. He believes that a broader view of construction history fits perfectly with the industry's moves to closer integration and can help guide that process.

About the CoA Research Forum

The College ofArchitecture in partnership with the Georgia Tech Library and Archives hoststhis monthly research series held on the last Thursday of each monthduring the academic year. The transition from drawing to modeling paradigms in AEC can be seen in a similar light. Where modeling was once seen as a way toward more accurate drafted results, it now catalyzes dramatic changes in the roles, work processes, obligations and relationships between the participants in the building process. This talk will examine how technology has wrought these changes, and what they might have in store for practitioners in the future, with particular attention to the central role of model-based representation in the rapidly changing building environment.

About Phillip G. Bernstein FAIA, RIBA, LEED AP

Phillip G. The current economic downturn precipitated by the U.S. subprime mortgage debacle, the potential for catastrophic climate change, the two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and more generally the war on terror, profoundly affects our ability to plan for a secure future. These unfolding events point to an immensely complex world with multiple layers of uncertain drivers and unknown "tipping points" and “Black Swans”. Now, more than ever, the most significant issues impacting cities and regions are forces outside their borders. This presentation is about confronting these challenges and finding a pathway to articulate the uncertainties through a different form of planning. Along the way I will discuss the evolving concept of sustainability and an approach to planning with hierarchical scenarios. I will also illustrate our efforts to develop some novel modeling and visualization tools to monitor and communicate sustainability indicators.

About the CoA Research Forum:

The College of Architecture in partnership with the Georgia Tech Library and Archives hosts this monthly research series held on the last Thursday of each month during the academic year. In each Forum, a CoA faculty member, research scientist, student, or colleague talks about his/her research.
